Falling in Love On The Path to Hell #4

Falling in Love wraps its first volume on a very strong note culminating in a well-done cliffhanger that should make the wait until January somewhat tolerable. This has been the kind of original story that showcases why Image Comics has become such a force for unique and exciting stories.

MacRaith was near death’s door at the end of last issue when he was saved by the samurai warrior Asami. Upon awakening, MacRaith wants some payback against Mohan only to have an encounter he did not expect on this mysterious island. Writer Gerry Duggan keeps surprising with the developments on the island. It doesn’t read like Duggan doesn’t have a clue where he’s going and making it up as he goes along. Instead, Duggan is crafting a fun fantasy tale where anything is possible.

Along the way, Duggan continues to provide more backstory and insight into MacRaith and Asami, which is further making them fascinating characters. Best of all, Duggan isn’t rushing to get to the falling in love aspect of the story and letting it play out a smart, methodical pace.

Artist Garry Brown is creating some inspired visuals that play into the anything is possible nature of the island. There’s some interesting imagery at play and Brown doesn’t shy away from intricate details and the unique looks of the characters. Chris O’Halloran keeps the colors muted while providing a quality, consistent tone. Letterer Joe Sabino ensures the dialogue is easy to read with some fun sound effect fonts.

This title remains compelling as it continues building momentum.
