No laughing matter as Joker Folie a Deux drops 81% in 2nd weekend

Joker Folie a Deux’s opening weekend wasn’t that funny with an underwhelming $37 million start. This weekend was even worse after word of mouth capsized any hopes for Warner Bros. of this film coming remotely close to sniffing a profit.

In its second weekend, the Todd Phillips/Joaquin Phoenix/Lady Gaga film very loosely based on the DC Comics character, dropped an astonishing 81% with an estimated $7.05 million. That’s the largest drop of any “comic book-based” film.

And as was the case with the first weekend where Sunday estimates put Joker Folie a Deux’s gross at $40 million, those estimates could sink further come Monday. For now, that’s good enough for a third-place finish in the Top 5.

So far, Joker Folie a Deux has earned $51.6 million. Put in more humbling terms, that’s still less than the opening weekend for The Flash ($55 million).

The new number one film was Terrifier 3, the gory horror film starring Art the Clown. It wasn’t a massive win at $18.3 million until a few factors are considered. That weekend haul is more than the full box office run of Terrifier 2 suggesting distributor Cineverse has a franchise with longer legs. With its miniscule $2.5 million budget, it’s all profit for Cineverse now. It took two years for a follow-up to Terrifier 2. Maybe a fourth installment will arrive at the box office sooner?

In second place was The Wild Robot, benefitting from no other family friendly competition. It earned a strong $13.45 million with a minimal 27% drop in its third weekend. The Dreamworks Animation/Universal film has $100 million in its sights now with $84 million domestically so far.

Coming in at fourth — for the moment — was Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Its $7.05 million is slightly under Joker: Folie a Deux but those numbers could change after the final haul is tallied on Monday. Regardless it’s the big winner of the year for Warner Bros. raking in $275 million domestically and $420 million worldwide.

Transformers On wrapped up the Top 5 with $3.65 million to add to its $52.8 million haul domestically and $111 million global gross.
