Star Wars The Black Series Mace Windu and 187th Legion Clone Trooper review
I’m digging Hasbro being more Clone Wars focused this year. With the Black Series Mace Windu and 187th Legion Clone Trooper two pack in hand, it’s nice to get a general and a clone in hand. Though there is some question about the wisdom of packing a name character and an army builder.
This is the first of a new Clone Wars subset — the Clones of the Republic. I’m torn if this rollout is fine since we have opportunities to army build in other formats or if the more army building two-packs the better. Still, I did want a Clone Wars show version of Mace with his armored gauntlets and this was a fun way to get it especially with a clone mostly matching his lightsaber color.
Let’s see if this set was worth my anticipation.
Packaging: We’re back to the wide window presentation so we can see the figure and the accessories. This was a Hasbro Pulse exclusive so you couldn’t shelf browse for the best-looking paintjob, but certainly welcome for MOC collectors.
This theme is the Clones of the Republic and the accent color is a sky blue. Either side has a portrait, but I don’t think there’s a mural connection image with the Jedi and the clones.
This bio is fine telling a wider story of the Clone Wars though I wanted more of the story of this particular Mace and the 187th Legion Clone Troopers.
Likeness: Mace is a combination of a few Mace figures.
There’s the standard basic version (get it on Amazon) and the cartoon Clone Wars armor layered look. Mace ditched that look early on in Clone Wars opting for the more streamlined armored gauntlets and wrist pads. Hasbro doesn’t lose points with me anytime they do smart reuse. That makes sense and sometimes you just need to take the layup.
I am wondering if Mace’s head is a smidge too small and shouldn’t be sized up a bit.
The 187th Legion Clone is on the 2020 body and not the most up to date 2023 mold. The 2020 mold is definitely less clunky and more articulated than its predecessor but lacking some of the flow of the ’23 version. I do love the sculpt as it’s sleek providing that proto-Stormtrooper look down just right especially with the Phase 2 helmet.
He’s also got a removable helmet so you can see the default base clone trooper head sculpt underneath. It has some nice detailing including scars along the forehead.
Paint: Mace has the Republic logo on his gauntlets and painted fingerless gloves. The capsules on his belt aren’t painted, but more annoying is the pegs connected his boots.
Previously, Hasbro painted them and now they’re the same cream color as Mace’s pants.
The 187th Legion Clone trooper has a more exciting color palette with the deep purple clashing sharply against the bright white with the teal accents on his helmet, arms and legs.
It’s a nice mix of colors that turned out very nice. As always with the clone figures, even a botched paint job isn’t a bad thing since it can just be attributed to battle damage.

Scale: Mace is taller than Obi-Wan Kenobi while being about eye to eye with Anakin Skywalker.
The clone’s helmet gives him additional height so he’s right there alongside Anakin and Mace.
He scales up properly with his fellow clones as you’d expect.
Articulation: Mace doesn’t have many limitations based on the Black Series articulation model and is probably the most articulated Jedi in my collection. That’s due to the ball-jointed torso that allows him to hit more dynamic angles.
He’s got the longer single-joint elbows that basically give him the same range as a double-jointed figure.
Mace even has better than average range on his butterfly shoulders. He can hit a dual grip lightsaber stance, but it would be awesome to be able to hit an arms raised pose.
The 187th has fairly smooth articulation for a Clone Trooper able to strike most of the signature battle stances.
He can charge into battle, take a more defensive stance or go into some hand-to-hand combat as needed.
Mace and the 187th Legion Clone trooper have:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders
- elbow (with swivel)
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- hips
- thighs
- knees (double jointed)
- ankles
Accessories: For most of the Clone Wars, Mace didn’t run around wearing his Jedi robe so it wasn’t a shock he didn’t come with one here.
He does of course come with his unique gold accented lightsaber with removable purple lavender blade. I could argue the blade could stand to be darker, but that would only really work with the white illumination in the center.
The 187th Legion trooper gets the standard issue clone trooper weapons. He’s got the smaller DC-15S Blaster Carbine.
And the 187th Legion Clone trooper also has the DC-15A blaster rifle, the larger rifle that needs to be held with both hands.
Worth it? This set was a perfectly reasonable price point over at Hasbro Pulse and Shop Disney coming in at $44.99. That’s better than the normal $50 you’d pack for a two-pack especially one with this much heavy reuse. Nicely done, Hasbro.
Rating: 10 out of 10
Mace is one of my favorite Jedi figures and this 187th Legion Clone is an awesome figure making for a must-have two-pack.
Where to get it? This is still sold out on Hasbro Pulse. You can try secondary sellers on Amazon.
