Image Comics 12/18/24 reviews – G.I. Joe #2, Rocketfellers #2
The Rocketfellers #2
The Rocketfellers is unlike any of the early batch of Ghost Machine titles, which is exactly why it’s immediately so endearing.
Writer Peter J. Tomasi is making the adventures of a time-displaced family from the future stuck in our present one of the more likable titles heading into 2025. These first two issues have been charming and surprisingly sweet. The lack of cynical and mean-spirited members of the family “just to spice things up” is definitely helping make for a pleasant read. Tomasi masters this even further by managing to not make the dialogue read corny or too old fashioned. It feels just right and the characters and family dynamic is so disarming the largely simplistic nature of the plots really work.
For this issue, the family sets out to get a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. And the award for best comic book release timing goes to…
The notion of actually cutting down a tree is foreign to the family, who were raised to value and protect the green. This makes for a memorable moment at the cut your own tree farm. While the family’s biggest issue was Roland’s solution to the lack of a tree, the mysterious hunter in 2425 is slowly taking steps to track them down. This leads to what could be a fairly significant moment in the history of the Ghost Machine brand.
Artist/co-plotter Francis Manapul is so adept at giving characters such warm personalities with his art. The Rocketfellers aren’t a small family, but Manapul has visually made it easy already to identify the family members just from their silhouettes. Despite a lack of lasers, swordplay or guns, Manapul makes the artwork exciting and thrilling. Rob Leigh joins in on the fun with some creative lettering and font choices.
The Rocketfellers seemed like a can’t miss with this creative team and so far, it hasn’t disappointed at all. This was another encouraging issue that the Ghost Machine won’t have any problems keeping its record for high quality titles intact. This is well worth checking out for comic fans who want something behind the standard superhero and vigilante themes.
