DC Multiverse Mister Terrific review – McFarlane Collector Edition No. 27

Mister Terrific has been one of my favorite DC characters since his arrival in the JSA title. Between his very cool outfit, his abilities and his intellect, he’s made for a (ahem) terrific addition to the DC universe. McFarlane Toys has been slow in cranking out JSA figures, but he’s starting to make some headway on the team from both the Golden Age and Modern era lineups.

With Mister Terrific joining the DC Multiverse line, I’m a lot more excited about McFarlane Toys cranking out more JSA figures.

Let’s see if this figure is fantastic or merely below average.

Packaging:  The Collector Edition line has a unique twist to separate it from the other Multiverse series with silver foil accents instead of the usual white. A wider window showcases more of the accessories and the figure. And there’s that handy Platinum Edition embossed sticker to state this is not the normal retail version.

As usual, there’s nothing particularly exciting along the side although it’s interesting to note that this states Mister Terrific is based on his JSA appearance. That’s interesting since the package artwork features the cover from Mister Terrific #1 from his appearance in the New 52 standalone series. (Check out Mister Terrific: Mind Games now on Amazon).

Likeness: It was an odd choice for McFarlane to do the Mister Terrific based on his very short-lived New 52 look since that didn’t last long in the comics. And his signature leather jacket and black and white attire has proven a challenging design to top.

The base body uses the Blue Beetle mold, a frustrating decision simply due to the telltale boot lining near the top of the boot. McFarlane has several molds now — including the Green Lantern Corps figure that would make more sense for a blank boot mold.

The Blue Beetle mold was not the best option for Mister Terrific, who is typically drawn around the same width and overall size as Batman. The Beetle mold is just a bit slighter. Some of that gets hidden thanks to the soft goods jacket that’s included. The jacket has some nice detailing with a red vinyl piping for the jacket lining.

His head sculpt is excellent featuring some really nice texture on the hair and a tremendous stoic expression.

Scale: Mister Terrific is listed at 6’2″ in the comics, the same height as Batman. He’s shorter than he should be thanks to that Beetle mold.

I don’t consider it a fair comparison with the Jay Garrick figure who is ridiculously out of scale with every figure in the line.

Paint:  As the Platinum Edition, this Mister Terrific is painted in his classic attire. There are some noticeable differences from the New 52 look specifically the white portion of his outfit ends in an angular manner right above the knee and the T on his face is painted black instead of red. His hands should be painted like he has fingerless gloves.

The biggest “paint” gaffe is the lack of ‘Fair Play’ on his jacket sleeves. That’s a disappointing omission especially since the DC Classics version from Mattel had that detail included.

Again, I feel like that tampo work would have been expected if his traditional look was the standard figure and not the variant.

Articulation: Mister Terrific doesn’t break any trends and sports the standard 22 points of articulation from the Multiverse line.

He’s the kind of character that does tend to sit back and lead the troops from a distance rather than leading the way in a fight. It helps to have more impulsive fighters like Power Girl, Hawkman and Wildcat on the team.  Mister Terrific is capable of doing all the standard articulation movements even with the jacket.

Accessories: McFarlane Collector Edition figures usually get more accessories than a standard Multiverse figure. Mister Terrific gets some very useful accessories.

First up, two additional face plates. McFarlane has been using these more often instead of separate head sculpts. It’s an easy way to cut down on costs and so long as the seam is smooth, it’s hardly noticeable. Terrific gets a slightly open mouth expression as if he’s reading some data that has him concerned.

The second is a yelling portrait for more intense action moments.

Underneath it is a weird plate with an open mouth and tongue to provide depth for the yelling plate. It’s an odd look, but fun to show.

He has a swappable left hand holding one of his T-spheres. The T-Sphere features a sculpted T with a light blue paint job to convey that it’s on.

There’s another T-sphere with an electrical blast effect around it as if to form a shield to protect Mister Terrific.

Finally, he’s got a pair of T-spheres connecting by a light blue translucent energy effect swirl. The DC Classics figure had a plug that fit into his back so simulate the T-sphere’s flying around him. It would have been cool for McFarlane to include some sort of stand for a similar effect.

He does have the basic black stand and collector card.

Worth it?  The Collector Edition figures run $30 though it’s hard to see what makes this more than the standard Multiverse figure. Ideally these would be more around the $24.99 price even though that’s the norm for McFarlane with Collect to Connect figures.

Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Mister Terrific is a flawed figure thanks to the body choice and wishy-washy commitment to his most iconic look. Still, as a big fan of the character I’m happy to have him in my McFarlane DC Multiverse collection.

Where to get it?  Mister Terrific seems to be easier to find at retail at Walmart. You can also order him online at Amazon or Entertainment Earth.
