Box office roundup

Captain America: Brave New World flies to $100M opening

The first Marvel Studios film of 2025 takes its usual spot atop the box office. Captain America: Brave New World matched box office forecasts of an $88 million opening standard weekend. Factoring in tomorrow’s President’s Day holiday, the fourth Captain America film — and first with Anthony Mackie in the starring role — is looking at a $100 million debut.

Box office experts are cautioning popping too much champagne, however…

The film has a weaker than anticipated 51% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes although the audience score is 79%. The CinemaScore is B-, which suggests Captain America: Brave New World might not have staying power atop the box office charts for a sustained run.

Captain America: Brave New World hasn’t fared as well overseas either with a $92.4 million opening, which made for a global haul for the first three days at $180.9 million.

On a more positive note for Captain America: Brave New World, there isn’t a lot of competition coming over the next few weeks. Even if the film suffers a significant second weekend drop like The Marvels (79% after a $46.1 million opening) and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantummania (70% drop in its second weekend after a $107.1 million opening), next weekend offers The Monkey and Cleaner. The weekend of Feb. 28 debuts Last Breath, Riff Raff and My Dead Friend Zoe so Captain America: Brave New World should manage at or near the top for the next three weeks.

Ironically it’s biggest competition might come from its distant runner-up this weekend.

Paddington in Peru came in at a distant second with $13 million ($16 million factoring in Monday). This is the third Paddington film in the series and is again a big hit with critics with a 94% score on RT and an A CinemaScore.

Coming in at third place was Dog Man at $9.7 million ($12.5 million for four days) to take its three-weekend total to $69.5. The film is already reaping a profit for distributor Universal as it only had a $40 million budget. Dog Man is sure to be a monster hit for the studio once it reaches home video as well.

In fourth place was Sony/Screen Gems’ Heart Eyes, the Valentine’s Day theme horror film, which brought in $10 million (and a projected $11.1 million for four days). Connecting with audiences looking for some less romantic options for Valentine’s Day, the film actually fared better in its second weekend as it opened to a modest $8.3 million. It now has earned $22.6 million.
