Free Agents wraps its first arc with a solid payoff and a tantalizing tease for the next storyline.
Barrage sends Breakpoint on the hunt to take down Verena DeVault’s collection of breach-tech. While Verena has managed to stay ahead of the FreeAgents so far, without her right-hand-man, Botokk, to offer strategic decisions, her forces are no match for the team. Barrage’s attack plan is efficient and the team effortlessly carries them out.
Writers Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicizea do a solid job showing the Free Agents in action and their brewing doubts over Barrage’s competence in leading them. It feels like this issue did a satisfactory job of creating a conflict with Barrage and the others while establishing a potential useful ally for him in taking the team down.

Artist Stephen Moody is showing a greater comfort level with the characters both in terms of their posture and use of their powers. Facial consistency from one page to the next and expressions remain challenges for Moody, but there is clear improvement throughout with the art.
Colorist Triona Tree Farrell’s use of a more muted color scheme works with this issue thanks to the lighter backdrops. Barrage’s control room has a number of shadowy corners to foreshadow his eventual full heel turn.
Free Agents has been a decent read since its start. It’s not the most revolutionary or fresh idea, but it benefits from the quality storytelling at work. The tease for the next arc makes for a good cliffhanger and sets the stage for a fun return to the world of the Free Agents.
