Hornsby and Halo #4

hornsby and halo #4

Hornsby and Halo’s lives have occasionally intersected, but this issue begins what could be an unbreakable bond between the two.

Last issue ended with Zachary and Rose being pursued by the undead. That would have been enough for the two teens to handle but they also start to change into their other forms — Zachary an angel and Rose a demon.

Both actions were spurred on by a heavenly celestial, who has no desire to see the truce between heaven and hell continue. By getting Zachary and Rose to break the truce, the war between the two realms can resume.

Writer Peter J. Tomasi is so talented at crafting engaging characters. Tomasi has taken a (no pun intended) slow burn in staging the scenario that would put Zachary and Rose on the same page, but with its arrival, Hornsby and Halo’s premise — and potential — is being realized in a very encouraging fashion.

The banter between the two already reads like Tomasi has been writing them for years instead of four issues. And the twist that the celestial being was raised by horrible parents and the infernal being raised by salt of the Earth parents is making for a clever dichotomy of the nature vs. nurture debate.

Artist Peter Snejbjerg is wonderfully telling the story. This issue features tremendous facial expressions from the titular characters, some more macabre elements like the zombies running around while infusing some classic superhero aspects to the series as well.

Colorist John Kalisz is also stepping up with some smooth color combinations. Kalisz also does solid work in coloring the power effects for Hornsby and Halo. Letterer Rob Leigh gives the zombies their own font and switches up the tone to indicate serious conversations.

Hornsby and Halo has been a slow and steady ride with two likable leads. With the action heating up, including the reveal of an apparently major character it’s not too late to get in on this title.
