McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse DC Direct Page Punchers Robin review

The Page Punchers Robin offers McFarlane Toys another crack at delivering a better version of Damian Wayne’s alter ego.

Damian got a figure early on in the McFarlane Toys’ DC Multiverse line, but the figure suffered from a cartoonish head sculpt and lousy articulation. That figure was enough to convince me I wasn’t going to stay invested much longer with this Multiverse line, but future releases were much better. That’s why I was so excited to see the reveal of the Dick Grayson Batman and this Page Punchers Robin. I loved that version of the Dynamic Duo and was thrilled to get a chance to have them both in a more articulated figure form. The Dick Batman figure was a solid release so I had high hopes for Robin.

Let’s see if once again my hopes are dashed with this release or if this was the Damian figure I wanted all along.

Packaging:  Unlike most of the DC Multiverse figures, this line has a very different setup. Page Punchers Robin is basically in a clear package with none of the usual inserts to fill out the plastic bubble. This is more like the clamshell setup for the Toy Biz Marvel Legends figures. It does make it even easier to check out the figure and see all the accessories, not like anyone could swipe out anything out of this packaging with the heavy plastic used.

On the back there’s a replica of the Batman and Robin #1 from the Batman: Reborn initiative minus the ads. This is a very clear directive of where new fans can learn more about this particular figure and the Batman that was released around the same time.

Likeness: The initial Robin was too stylized to fit in well with the Batman figures I had in my collection. The Page Punchers Robin is stylized to resemble the artwork from Frank Quitely. With maybe the hair not being as high as Quitely drew it, this is an excellent translation to figure form of the comic book source material. Along with the Dick Batman, McFarlane Toys really delivered a classic looking modern Batman & Robin.

This uses a decent amount of parts from the Infinite Frontier mold as Robin reuses the arms, legs and boots. The simplicity of this original costume for the Page Punchers Robin really works in its favor. Another big shift from the original figure is the Page Punchers Robin has a soft good, wired cape underneath a plastic collar piece that feeds into a separate black soft goods hood. That’s very cool and I love the effort to get Damian’s original Robin costume just right in figure form.

With the comic cover packaged with the figure it’s easy to spot any costume discrepancies, but the sculpt has it all down. From the three vertical lines in the tunic, the angled containers for his utility belt, the shorter bracelet style gloves with the two points and the shorter, laced boots, the details are nicely done. Although the boots should be a little bit taller and not be ankle length.

Scale: Damian should come up to about Dick Batman’s abdomen. While the Page Punchers Robin is a oh so slightly taller than that mark, the sculpt does balance it out by making him much slighter. He definitely has a pre-teen physique, and he pairs up well with the Dick Batman figure.

Paint:  The paintjob is mostly on point here. Damain’s mask and even his lips have a very sharp paintjob. His hair even has the comic book coloring with a blue wash to better bring out the black sculpted details.

His R logo circle probably should be thicker, but it’s applied cleanly. The sloppiest aspect of the paint job is the gold clasp for his belt, which has some red overspray. Thanks to the sculpt setup, Page Punchers Robin’s boot laces are pretty cleanly.

There is also a wash in his tunic that provides some cool shading and depth to the outfit.

Articulation: Robin has much improved articulation compared to his original release. Thats due to better range in the torso and better hip range so his right leg doesn’t naturally skew to the right.

Robin can hit some dynamic poses although thanks to only have one open right hand, he can’t wield his sword as dramatic as I’d like.

Page Punchers Robin has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • rotator cuff
  • elbow
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • waist
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee
  • ankle
  • toe

Accessories:  Page Punchers Robin gets a decent number of accessories.

First, he’s got his sword. The first Damian Wayne Robin had a sword that seemed too big for his height. This one is still large but scaled more appropriately. It’s got some wrapped sculpted elements along the grip and nicely done details on the pommel.

To suggest what Damian could do with the sword he also comes with the cracked mask of Professor Pyg. This is a really nice sculpt and I’m hoping this motivates the McFarlane Toys team to crank out a comic accurate figure of the good Professor sooner than later.

Finally, he’s got the standard trading card with bio information and the circular black stand.

Worth it?  Page Punchers Robin started out at the normal $22.99 price, but now that he’s gotten harder to find he’s now going for $29.99 if you’re lucky. That’s not a good a deal as the usual McFarlane figure but considering the number of times I’ve gotten figures in this line on clearance I suppose it balances out.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

This is an excellent Robin figure and by far the best version of Damian Wayne that I have in figure form. The articulation could be a bit better, but I’m ecstatic to have this in my collection.
