DC Comics reviews 3/26/25 – Batman 158, Absolute Wonder Woman #6

Absolute Martian Manhunter #1

absolute martian manhunter 1

Absolute Martian Manhunter certainly goes for an unexpected, uneasy and unfamiliar take on the DC stalwart in this new Absolute-universe based series.

Writer Deniz Camp and artist Javier Rodriguez certainly go all-in with this story of John Jones, an operative with the FBI’s Stochastic Terrorism Task Force, who sees the world differently than anyone else.

Jones has a wife and son but isn’t in love with the idea of spending more time with them. Even after getting an effect paid time off vacation opportunity after surviving a bomb blast.

Camp’s dialogue is intriguing as Jones seemingly has so many thoughts running through his head. Rodriguez illustrates this in such an inspired creative manner. It’s definitely unorthodox with random shapes and imagery appearing in the background but fits with the off-kilter theme of the series. Rodriguez also incorporates some uncomfortably close perspectives on seemingly disconnected items. The color choices are also stunning fully playing into the unpredictable tone.

There’s a quirky, weird and ultimately very captivating tone playing out in Absolute Martian Manhunter. This limited series is not just a unique spin on Martian Manhunter, but for one of the more intentionally bizarre titles that’s come from DC in many years.

It’s a little early to determine the staying power of this character, but this is a very exciting start.
