DC Comics reviews 3/26/25 – Batman 158, Absolute Wonder Woman #6
Justice League Unlimited #5
Justice League Unlimited is such a high-end quality title from a top tier creative team that at times it feels like they’re just competing with themselves. Writer Mark Waid, artist Dan Mora, colorist Tamra Bonvillain and letterer Dave Sharpe are so dialed in that it’s like watching a dream team working on a dream title with no restraints to their creativity.
Issue #5 sees the team on high alert for the threat of Inferno as they’re in attendance at a summit attended by many world leaders. It’s the perfect target for Inferno and naturally they’re happy to oblige.
This time the JL is comprised of Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, Star Sapphire, Flash, Impulse and Thunderer. Waid’s deep love of the DC lore and so many of its characters is appreciated as is his command of their voices right down to the banter between Wally and Bart.
Meanwhile, Batman and Martian Manhunter are with Atom trying to find MM’s missing powers. Waid doesn’t delay that reveal any longer with a pretty stunning payoff. As usual, Waid sets Mora up for some major action sequences and Mora just crushes it. Mora constructs such elaborate panels and Bonvillain pumps up the intensity further with gorgeous color mixes. Sharpe doesn’t miss out on the fun either with some dynamic sound effects.
This issue also kicks off a massive crossover with Batman/Superman World’s Finest, a fitting return to the creative team’s former title. Waid remains on World’s Finest, which should guarantee smooth transitions from one title to the other.
Justice League Unlimited remains the best bang for your buck in terms of expert characterization, incredibly captivating artwork and some action worthy of the heroes of the DC Universe. This new arc looks like it has the makings to be the definitive stretch early on in this run.
