Superman #24

With the hype and excitement of the Absolute universe titles and Hush 2 in Batman 158, don’t sleep on Superman #24, the big issue that drastically switches up the status quo in advance of next month’s milestone issue.

Superman has some issues with Mercy announcing plans to sell SuperCorp technology to countries and groups in need while Superwoman has her first mission with the Justice League. Writer Joshua Williamson hits all the right notes with both storylines.

Superman is still leery of Lex Luthor especially now that his memories are starting to return. While this amnesiac Luthor has been very helpful to his mission, Superman is probably right to be leery of him at all times.

Williamson assembles a unique blend of characters to partner with Lois under the command of Mr. Terrific. The beauty of this new formatted Justice League Unlimited is it really channels the dynamic of the cartoon where any group of characters can form the basis of a squad. Creeper and Superwoman made for a shockingly fun pairing. It doesn’t hurt that Williamson is one of the DC writers who gets how every character should sound/read.

Eddy Barrows with inker Eber Ferreira has become one of DC’s more reliable art tandems. Barrows artwork is so smooth and he can craft so much emotion out of his characters, which is especially key in this issue as some major bombshells get revealed. Colorist Alejandro Sanchez goes for a more subdued color palette, but it works in the case of this story with so many secrets shrouded just in time for the big reveals. Ariana Maher’s lettering was also solid with an easy to read flow.

Williamson had some significant surprises lurking under the surface of this arc that makes the payoff all the more surprising. Superman #25 should be a really strong issue and the seeds of that big issue flourish here.
