DC Multiverse Huntress review – McFarlane Collector Edition No. 23

Huntress represents a welcome turning point from McFarlane Toys as the company is starting to get more female figures out to DC fans. I had my issues with a fair amount of the New 52, but I did enjoy a decent number including the Earth-2 title and the Huntress solo title.

Always looking to keep collectors on their toes, McFarlane Toys opted for a New 52 version of Huntress. This wasn’t a terrible choice by any means though a few design decisions do hold her back some.

Let’s see if Huntress gets proudly displayed or if she’s going to be in the dank corner of the Batcave on my shelf.

Packaging:  The Collector Edition line features silver foil accents in lieu of the usual white in the base Multiverse line. Collector Edition figures also sport a wider window that showcases more of the accessories and the figure. This is the base version of Huntress so there’s no Platinum Edition embossed sticker.

I appreciate the clarity provided by the side, which states the inspiration for the figure. In this case, it’s the New 52 version of Huntress.

The back features the cover to Huntress #1.

Likeness: A The New 52 look is a sensible update to various Huntress looks over the years. Huntress doesn’t necessarily have a definitive look so much as certain base elements that need to be part of every costume. That was covered nicely with the New 52 costume even if it’s not as memorable as say the Jim Lee Hush version.

Huntress uses a fair amount of the Arkham City Catwoman (available at my affiliate Amazon). While McFarlane did create some new pieces namely the shoulder pads the reuse hinders getting the most accurate look to the source material. Namely the gauntlets, shelled-layer style boots and kneepads. Her belt should also include two smaller pouches that drape down just above her thigh. Those elements add a certain extra visual oomph to the outfit, so their omission is disappointing.

I do like the work on Huntress’ head sculpt. She’s got a solid focused expression, and her hair is flaring out in a realistic way with her cape and mask setup. Continuing with the theme of providing more value for the line, Huntress has a soft goods cape with some wire to aid in poseability.

Scale: Huntress is listed at 6′. While this version of Huntress won’t really interact with other characters we’ve got so far from McFarlane she’s fine as a main continuity Huntress as she’s smaller than Batman.

Paint:  The Platinum Edition is a solid repaint that has most of the elements of the JLA Huntress attire. Since that look actually fits in better with a team that’s slowly being built, I wouldn’t mind tracking down that version.

The base Huntress figure has a nice and clean paintjob. I really like the deep purple used as it really stands out against the black. The white stripes across the torso and along her legs are crisp without the annoying bleed through that’s very common with white painted over black.

Huntress has sharp edges in her mask, some of which require precise detailed paint applications. One point is missing some paint, but the rest was very clean. That’s high marks considering the degree of difficulty with the face plate.

Articulation: I appreciate that there is no difference in the articulation scheme from the female and male figures in the McFarlane Collector Edition/Multiverse line. Huntress gets the standard articulation scheme for the line with 22 points of articulation. She’s able to take out an assortment of street level thugs and get good range of motion.

Unlike too many Marvel Legends figures, Huntress didn’t have any extra problems from the high heel sculpt. She could stand with no trouble and hold more action-oriented stances just fine.

Accessories:  Huntress gets a generous number of accessories.

First are the two additional swappable portraits. One is a tighter mask that stays on her face. This option works best for the JLA platinum figure. Still, it’s a nice alternate portrait.

Next up is a face mask that works closer to the default one. Basically, it’s Helene smirking as if she’s amused with a thug. Both plates fit on easily enough allowing for some fun display options.

Huntress also has two other sets of hands — fists and open hands.

Naturally, she comes with her crossbow. The detailing on it is pretty basic, but it gets the job done.

She also has the basic circular black stand and a trading card.

Worth it?  The Collector Edition figures run $30. These figures tend to have enough to justify being more than the $23 standard price, but $30 is too much. It seems like $25 is the sweet spot. I was able to get her at Best Buy for half off, which is a great price for her.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Huntress gets a pretty decent figure, but the lack of proper gloves and boots hold it down just a bit for me.

Where to get it?  She is available through most online sites as Best Buy and GameStop are the only brick and mortar spots I’ve seen her. You can also check out my affiliate Amazon and Entertainment Earth.
