Transformers 19

After the wild insanity of the previous installment, Transformers 19 is much more of a cool down issue with a focus on Megatron.

Writer Daniel Warren Johnson breaks down a new chapter in Megatron’s life, one of which further forged his drive and determination as the leader of the Decepticons.

Transformers 19 opens with Megatron captured by the Quintessons. He’s set to endure various trials for an unrevealed test starting with a brawl for survival against the Sharkticon Horde. Johnson always has a flair for coming up with some intense scenarios pitting characters against foes readers probably never envisioned. This Megatron vs. Sharkticons is another great example especially since in the Transformers cartoon lore, the Decepticons didn’t face off against the Sharkticons.

Johnson does impressive work in making Megatron sympathetic in Transformers 19. That’s a tough feat considering Megatron’s status as the unmatched, toughest baddest and cruel member of the Decepticons.

Surprisingly, that’s not too hard when the Quintessons unleash a massive Transformer of their own that dwarves even Megatron. This is another amazingly cool idea from Johnson’s seemingly limitless imagination when it comes to adding more layers to the already massive Transformers mythos.

Joining Johnson for Transformers 19 is guest artist Luda Lullabi. Lullabi’s work is solid with smart perspectives to show Megatron is battling against the odds as opposed to standing tall and triumphantly over some defeated opponent. A few panels aren’t as clear as the work done by usual artist, Jorge Corona, but Lullabi proves a more than competent fill-in artist.

Colorist Adriano Lucas adds some nice blends of color while frequently casting Megatron in shadows to again highlight him fighting against insurmountable odds. Letterer Rus Wooton always has fun with creative sound effect placements and fonts that bring so much to the presentation.

Transformers 19 is a slight detour from the main storyline, but absolutely worth checking out to learn more of Megatron’s origins.
