Andor – Harvest review S2 E3

Harvest wraps up the three-episode premiere of Andor. Typically with the first season, two episodes set up a big pay off on the third. Will that pattern hold true here with Harvest?

On Mina-Rau, the Imperial immigration patrol is closing in. Fortunately, Brasso, Bix and Wil can rely on Kellen, who’s devised a plan for them to sneak around the patrols.

Kellen knows there’s only so much Bradso can say, but asks if he can get word to Cassian’s big boss about the problems on the planet. Brasso’s response is not an encouraging one — it’s going on all over. Kellen just wants to know “why can’t they just leave us alone?” Amen, brother.

There has become a real weirdness to how many Star Wars storylines mirror the real world.

As a part political-thriller, Andor is coming out in a very unique time in history, which makes the Empire seem even more menacing and threatening.

Turning from the bleak side to the high society and wasteful opulence is the big wedding on Chandrila. Mon tells Leida she can still call off the wedding, like she wishes her mother did for her. You do not have to go through this.

Leida stays on brat mode and says, “I wish you were drunk.” Too bad Leida doesn’t have Sansa Stark on speed dial. That might offer her some better perspective.

It’s time to get married.  This really feels like such a ridiculous waste of money and resources when you consider the poor farmers over on Mina-Rau that just want to be left the heck alone to toil for minimum wage while awaiting the harvest. Or the rebels on Yavin-4 are partly fighting each other simply because they don’t have any food.

This wedding reception is tiresome. It’s hard to get too invested in characters whose biggest issues are so small in the galactic sense of the shadow of the empire. At least there’s the self-aware Mon and Luthen, who’s being so gregarious while silently seething and strategizing.

Mon is still rattled by Tay’s casual threat he needs to get paid. Luthen assures her people will fail. “That’s our curse.” Luthen isn’t feeling this foolishness with Tay and stresses that they’ve been vulnerable forever, adding that Mon needs to be protected. Mon isn’t sure what he’s saying, to which Luthen responds “How nice for you.” Man, Luthen is coooold.

Mon decides to unwind after all this Rebellion scheming and dealing with Tay’s greed with a little EDM dancing and a drink (or three). Luthen meanwhile shoots Vel a look. She repeats that same you know what I mean glance at Tay’s driver, who just so happens to be her right-hand from a previous mission, Cinta. That’s a lot of non-verbal communication that said a ton.

Dedra and Syril have their Pier-One commercial best life playing out. What is on Syrill’s playlist? And when is it dropping for us commoners? Dedra putting her hair up is a sign she is ready for business. Tonight’s business is finally meeting Syril’s mother, Eedy.

After the Ghorum assignment, this is yet another situation that is not going the way Dedra would like, but it’s an interesting question what she would consider worse. Syril’s OCD is very triggered with her dripping her food on the table. In fairness, the woman is a menace at the dinner table. Dedra is not enjoying watching his mother browbeating Syril. She was raised in an Imperial Kinderblock. Is that a franchise?

After Syril has taken all he can stand till he can’t stand no more and stalks out in a huff, Dedra lays it out for Eedy. “I can guarantee a level of engagement, but it will be inversely proportionate to the level of anxiety you generate in our lives.” That line is too great not to use for anyone who is a complete and utter bother in my life from now on. Dedra hasn’t been my favorite character, but this might have been my favorite scene she’s been in for the entire series. It was great as was Eedy immediately changing her tune after being checked.

Onto more serious matters, Kleya gets that call she’d been awaiting on her comms — it’s Cassian. She warns him that home is a little too crowded for him to visit right now. That’s not very convincing in stopping Cassian, who immediately heads off to Mina-Rau in hopes of aiding his friends.

Wil is in the process of saying goodbye to his girlfriend as they spot an Imperial patrol arriving at her place. That doesn’t line up at all what Kellen said as he mentioned they’d show up the next day.

Brasso tells Bix to get ready as he races off in his speeder to get Will back safe and sound only to get captured for his trouble. Kellen set them up, but he didn’t even get 30 Imperial credits for it.

That pesky lieutenant returns to Bix’s spot and notes they’re packing up. Bix tries to explain it as the harvest is here and it’s keeping everyone busy. The lieutenant quits with the games and says he knows Bix is illegal. Maybe if she massaged his shoulders he’d come up with a solution for this delicate situation?

This aggressive “flirting” takes a worse turn as he starts getting physical with Bix in a very clear rape attempt. She manages to fight him off and her blow with a wrench leaves him dazed enough that he stumbles out of the living quarters and breaks his neck.

His driver sees this and alerts the Imperial patrol. Wil manages to distract him, but Bix is the one that kills the driver too. It’s too late as the patrol is heading to the camp. Good thing Cassian arrives and strafes them with the TIE Avenger. He’s clearly been taking lessons from the Empire with their strafing soldiers who can’t possibly fight back. Hopefully the harvest farmers will have something to salvage after this strafing run.

After saving them, Cassian heads out to defend Brasso, who’s gotten away from the remaining patrol Stormtroopers and is speeding off. He graduated from the Rickon Stark Retreat Academy and manages to get shot by a Stormtrooper. In what world is that sentence ever accurate???

Cassian reunites with Bix and Wil, but staying ahead of the Empire has been costly with Brasso’s death. Harvest successfully raises the stakes for season 2 while establishing the desperate state of Cassian and his crew.
