Box office roundup

Sinners’ second weekend burns through box office for consecutive win

Sinners’ second weekend at the box office was very impressive. The film raked in another $44 million to bring its domestic total to $92 million. If estimates early Sunday are conservative, there’s a chance that Sinners could earn $100 million by Monday.

Even more impressive was Sinners’ second weekend dropped a mere 8 percent from its opening weekend tally of $48 million. Sinners’ second weekend drop isn’t unprecedented, but it is rare.

Crazy Rich Asians had a good $26.5 million opening and only lost 6.4% of its debut for a $24.8 million second weekend.

This is easily the best second weekend of director/writer Ryan Coogler’s career. In 2008, Black Panther had a massive $202 million opening and dropped a still solid 44.7% for a strong second weekend of $117 million.

Its 2023 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, opened to $181 million and had a second weekend of $66.4 million for a 63.3% drop. Creed opened in 2016 to $29.6 million and had a 48.4% drop in its second weekend with $15 million.

Sinner is now easily on track to make $200 million. With Sinners’ second weekend haul, it’s now the fifth highest grossing film of 2025 trailing Dogman by $5 million. It’s likely by next weekend it should come close or surpass Mufasa: The Lion King ($126 million for the year despite its Dec. 20 release).

In fifth place is Until Dawn, a very loose adaptation of the video game with $7 million. The film had a meager budget of $15 million, but its CinemaScore was a C+ suggesting this won’t be a player in the Top 5 next week.
