Andor – I Have Friends Everywhere review S2 E5

I Have Friends Everywhere certainly raised the stakes of this three-episode arc with some seismic moves playing out by the time the credits rolled.

Kleya was on the ones and twos rightfully worried that Davo Sculden might accidentally find the listening device on his artwork Kleya placed after discovering another was counterfeit. Luthen is not pleased with this news and goes all Monday Morning quarterback on her questioning her need to tune in to his conversations in the first place. Kleya lets him have his moment and stresses that they need to get the bug at the upcoming party.

Cassian isn’t heading to a party, but he does know the secret key for his new cover story — I Have Friends Everywhere. When Cassian came up on an establishment that looked like a diner, I instantly got excited about the idea of Cassian knowing Dexter Jettster as well. He’s a designer interested in some Ghorman fabric, which gives him the perfect cover to chat up Carro Rylanz to determine if he and his rebel faction would make reliable allies for Luthen.

Cassian arrives and gets real intel from the bellhop (Stefan Crepon), whose father was killed by Moff Tarkin during a peaceful protest. Worse, Tarkin just had them slaughtered because he wanted to land. This is extraordinary work getting over a character we have a pretty reasonable sense is not a good guy with more crummy things he’s done. Also, this was a tremendous scene showing Cassian’s skill at disarming people and getting them to open up about more damning evidence that the Empire needs to be shut down.

Carro’s daughter, Enza (Alaïs Lawson) meets Cassian and promptly gets a lesson in quality subterfuge. She did need to get this valuable lesson. “You need to be more careful.” It’s a little unnerving how adept Cassian is at codeswitching like his mentor Luthen now.

Cassian meets Carro, who tells him they’ve got a spy giving them info.  I Have Friends Everywhere shows Cassian is well versed in the Imperial tactics including feeding misinformation like which cargo trucks are carrying weapons.

MORE:

Elsewhere on Ghorman, Syril is infuriated to learn that ISB Tech found a listening device in his office. Leeza (Caroline Vanier), Carro’s mole in Syril’s office, manages to get word to the group before they’re discovered. Now new security measures will be enacted going forward. He catches up with Dedra, who’s only got an hour. He’s pretty confident they can get some stuff done in that timeframe. Also of note: Dedra doesn’t like the lights on. Good to know and who had that tidbit down for I Have Friends Everywhere?

They both update Major Partagaz, who agrees to go along with their plan to let the rebels get some confidence and taste what winning feels like before turning things on them. That’s just mean. Dedra is an ice-cold fish, but she has had some moments this season.

Both Syril and Cassian watch the transport with members of Ghorman’s rebel group. Cassian reaches the conclusion that there’s very little reason to think they could successfully raid the cargo trucks. Carro isn’t happy to hear that news, but Cassian is going to be proven right if they do decide to go through with it.

Luthen visits Bix, who immediately thinks he’s come to tell her the worst about Cassian. No, he’s here to do an in-person evaluation to see if she’s in that bad state Cassian suggested. While he doesn’t think she’s needs constant supervision, Luthen does tell Bix that they need her…and they need her healthy.

Wilmon is stuck training Saw Gerrera’s man, Pluti (Marc Rissman) with the bomb mechanism setup. It’s not going great. Pluti is starting to figure it out and questions Saw’s plans for Wilmon afterwards. He’s supposed to take him back to Luthen, but Saw doesn’t need another loose end. Pluti pleads to keep him alive, and Saw agrees to keep him…for now.

That’s bad news for Pluti, who Saw shoots in the head. Two Tubes produces a listening device to out the Empire traitor. But knowing Saw, who doesn’t have friends everywhere, was that part of some crazy plot? Saw makes his pitch to have Wilmon join his crew saying a revolution is not for the sane and they’ll all be dead before the New Republic arrives, but this is the start of that major turnaround right now.

It’s a very dramatic moment that naturally Forest Whitaker crushes. Wilmon considers the source and how his life has played out so far and decides Saw might be unhinged, but he’s not exactly wrong.

I Have Friends Everywhere sets the stage for an impactful final installment of the Ghorman rebellion, which is all but assured to fail if Cassian isn’t with them.
