DC Multiverse Wildcat review (2025) Target exclusive

Wildcat started off as second-tier member of the Justice Society to the point he was replaced by a younger character Yolanda Montez. Somehow, he would evolve into one of the more important members of the modern-era JSA. As McFarlane Toys starts to dabble with knocking out more members of the JSA, it made sense that Wildcat was among the first reinforcements joining Green Lantern Alan Scott and Jay Garrick The Flash.

Let’s see if this Wildcat proves a worthy addition to the JSA display or if this cat needs to be left as a stray.

Packaging:  This is the base Multiverse packaging with the white accents along the mainly black color scheme. For whatever reason, Wildcat gets a McFarlane Gold Label sticker on the left side.

The packaging doesn’t offer many clues about the reference for the figure nor does the rear art, which really looks like it was done via AI. And I am not a fan. It’s not like there isn’t several standalone images of Wildcat to use.

Likeness: Ted Grant’s costume has had the same kind of basic style with minor tweaks along the years. The most telling aspect of the modern Wildcat costume is the wraps around his fists and wrists. Ted was a former boxer, so he understands the value of protecting his fists. The wrap sculpt is exceptionally done with the only gap between the wrist ball, which seems unavoidable.

A common element of the costume are the cat ears, which are usually not standing straight up to avoid any Batman comparisons. They’re somewhat sloped back. His mask has some sharper lines like it’s a helmet instead of a mask. The cheeks section of the mask should be more prominent and actually sculpted instead of being handled via the paintjob. That’s also where his whiskers appear, but that is not something feasible for this scale.

With the modern costume, Wildcat’s cat style foot pads have been swapped out for boots. Wildcat is a character whose size really varies based on the artist so there’s a valid argument that he should be using a larger mold, but this slimmer buck isn’t ridiculous either.

Scale: Wildcat is listed at 6’5″ which should make him one of the taller members of the JSA. Scale is more of a suggestion for McFarlane Toys, but he’s accurately scaled except against the gargantuan Jay Garrick Flash.

Paint: Wildcat’s costume is one of those deals where it’s been colored black and blue. It seems like most colorists have settled on blue with a lot of black shading. McFarlane Toys went with a deep blue and added some lighter blue shading for that comic book look before fading to black around the shins to the boots. It’s an interesting paint effect.

Since the cheeks weren’t sculpted, the whiskered area needed more of a white paintjob instead of the light blue. The eyes were really well done and they also added in an appropriate five o’clock shadow to him. The wraps have a nice brown wash to dirty them up a bit as well.

Articulation: Every McFarlane figure sticks with the same 22 points of articulation. Wildcat has a pretty fluid sense of movement thanks to the butterfly shoulders that lets him really get a good punching pose.

His elbow joints do look a bit janky in some poses, but otherwise this is a fun figure to pose and get creative with in striking solid boxing stances.

Wildcat has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • butterfly shoulders
  • elbow
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • waist
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee
  • ankle
  • toe

Accessories: Wildcat isn’t a hero who needs a lot of extras, but there were a few available options here that oddly weren’t offered.

All he has is the basic circular black stand and a trading card.

Wildcat could have come with an unmasked Ted Grant head sculpt or another take on his cat mask as various artists have different takes on it.

To just get the circle stand is pretty underwhelming.

Worth it?  Wildcat has become one of the pillars of the Justice Society of America over the last decade or so, but he doesn’t get much to really justify the standard $22.99 price point. Given the less intensive demands of this figure, he probably would have even better served paired with a more sculpt-intensive figure like Dr. Mid-Nite in a two-pack. I got him for $14 and still find myself wondering if I couldn’t have chanced grabbing him for a cheaper clearance price.

Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Wildcat gets a pretty great figure with the hood/forehead setup being the lone drawback.
