Thunderbolts* retains top spot, Sinners hits $200 million
The top films largely remained unchanged with Thunderbolts* and Sinners repeating as the number one and two films atop the box office.
Thunderbolts* earned $35 million in its second weekend. That makes for a 52% decrease from its debut last weekend where it brought in $74 million. As far as recent Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Thunderbolts* is holding up much better.
Eternals had a 62,3% drop from its opening weekend in 2021. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantummania: had a 70% drop, which was eclipsed later in 2023 by The Marvels with a 78% drop. This year’s other earlier MCU release, Captain America: Brave New World had a 68.3% drop although it had a stronger opening with an $88 million opening that shot up to $100 million after factoring in President’s Day Monday.
So far Thunderbolts* has brought in $128.5 million domestically and $272 million worldwide.
Next week, Final Destination: Bloodlines arrives in theaters, but it might not have the kind of reach since the last installment of the franchise came out in 2009. If that holds true, look for Thunderbolts* to have a three-peat at the box office. Thunderbolts* is still trailing behind Captain America: Brave New World for the year’s top comic book movie. BNW ended its box office run with $200.4 million.
With Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning arriving in May 23, Thunderbolts* won’t have too much longer to catch up to Brave New World so it will need a big performance next weekend.
Sinners added another $21.1 million to its haul, which made it 2025’s second highest grossing films with $216 million. Given its phenomenal word of mouth and minimal weekend after weekend drop, it easily could retain the No. 2 spot next weekend as well.
In another impressive feat for Sinners, it’s the highest grossing original film since Disney’s animated hit Coco back in 2017 to cross the $200 million threshold. Considering Coco had the benefit of attracting families since it was an animated film tailor-made for more than two ticket purchases, Sinners’ feat might be more significant. Worldwide, Sinners has earned $283 million.

A Minecraft Movie held onto the No. 3 again bringing in a solid $8 million for its sixth weekend. That takes its tally to $409 million domestically and $909 million worldwide. Stronger competition is coming this summer, but A Minecraft Movie should be 2025’s first billion dollar hit.
In fourth place was The Accountant 2, which took in $6.09 million for a decent 36% drop from its third weekend to bring its domestic haul to $50.8 million and $71 million worldwide.
Clown in a Cornfield earned a spot in the top five with a solid $3.8 million debut. Considering its less than $1 million budget, the film is already a winner for distributor IFC.
