Lilo & Stitch, Mission: Impossible lead record $323M Memorial Day weekend

Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning made for a mammoth, record-setting Memorial Day pairing.

‘Stitpossible’ — along with some help from three Top 5 regulars — powered the box office to a best ever $322 million Memorial Day weekend.

Lilo & Stitch earned a whopping $145.5 million over the traditional three-day weekend and estimated $183 million for the Memorial Day weekend. The only film to top its four-day opening was 2008’s Black Panther, which earned a mammoth $242 million during its February release for President’s Day weekend.

That equals another massive win for Disney with its live-action adaptations of its beloved animated properties. Lilo & Stitch isn’t as old as some of the other Disney properties — it debuted in 2002 — but has been one of the more popular and commercially successful films since its arrival. Lilo & Stitch also fared well internationally with $158 million to take its total to an impressive $341.7 million opening weekend.

Its huge box office cruised past a Memorial Day weekend record recently set in 2022 by Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, which opened to $126 million for the usual weekend and $16o million for the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Cruise did race on for a record of his own with Final Reckoning, the alleged last installment for the Mission Impossible franchise, powering through for a series-best $77 million opening for the four-day weekend. Over the traditional weekend, it earned $63 million. Mission: Impossible – Fallout held that title when it debuted in 2018 with a strong $61 million. Final Reckoning marked a sharp rebound from Dead Reckoning: Part 1, which was swallowed up in the wake of Barbenheimer, and opened to $55 million in 2023.

Overseas, Final Reckoning also scored big with $127 million to kick off its global haul at $190 million.

In third place, was last week’s champ, Final Destination: Bloodlines, with $19 million to take its haul to $94,6 million domestically and $187 million worldwide. Following a solid full week at the box office along with the weekend earnings, Bloodlines is now already the highest grossing installment of the six-film franchise.

Thunderbolts* earned $9.5 million/$12 million over the holiday to take its haul to $171 million domestically and $353 million worldwide. Despite the early proclamations from Disney CEO Bob Iger, the film seems unlikely to make a profit given its $180 million budget since theaters get a 50/50 split of ticket proceeds.

Sinners remained in the Top 5 with a solid $9.1 million/$11.2 million tally bringing its domestical haul to $259 million and $339 million worldwide.
