It’s nice to see a DC comic where the writer actually celebrates the rich history of the brand. Writer Jeff Lemire takes a trip down memory road for this issue, which finds the JSA of 1945 battling the remnants of Hitler’s super powered villains. This team consists of Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Flash, Wildcat, Hourman and Liberty Belle. The latter was the longtime leader of the All-Star Squadron, but why quibble? If he’d added in fellow Squadron members like Amazing Man, Tarantula, Firebrand and Johnny Quick it would have been even better. Speaking of, who can I petition to get a All-Star Squadron Omnibus?

While most of the JSA battles Baron Blitzkrieg and Zyklon, Hourman and Wildcat encounter another pair of notable soldiers in the DCU and tangle with Johnny Sorrow and Wotan. This proves a solid link to the present-day storyline with the new Injustice Society. Lemire is such a natural writing these characters that I’d happily add to his workload and call for him to do an old-school continuing adventures of the All-Star Squadron series.

Gavin Guidry’s art is a terrific blend of Golden Age nostalgia and modern-day panel construction and perspectives. Guidry would be a strong candidate for this All-Star series that I really want to read after this issue. Luis Gurrero’s colors and Steve Wands’ lettering put the solid finishing touches on the visuals.

This brief flashback really wasn’t enough with this creative team. It almost felt like a shame to wrap the issue going back to the present day. JSA has been a solid, reliable title for DC and this issue shows that an occasional look back to the past definitely wouldn’t be a bad idea.
