G.I. Joe Classified Series Dreadnok Road Pig review No. 135

Road Pig is the main enforcer of the Dreadnoks with his massive physique and his big cinderblock sledgehammer. But it’s his more thoughtful, logical personality that has his fellow Dreadnoks more creeped out.

The Classified Series team is making some serious headway in finishing up the core Dreadnoks. Monkeywrench has been announced so now we just need Thrasher and Zanzibar to get the complete Real American Hero ‘Noks.

Larry Hama wrote Road Pig especially fun with his split personality Donald, who was eloquent and calculating. Basically, the antithesis of the rest of his crew. And he harbored a massive crush on Zarana, though Hama never truly made it clear if those affections were reciprocated.

Let’s see if Road Pig is another Dreadnok winner or just needs to get buried in the trough.

Packaging: As a deluxe figure, Road Pig comes with the wider window setup. The black color scheme with just the Cobra logo to add some noticeable color is kind of boring. At least we get to see the figure and all the accessories cleanly.

His side art features a pretty intimidating portrait as he’s wearing his boar helmet and has his dog pal, Rawkus at the ready. On the other side we get the tiny skill stats and the QR code to nowhere.

On the back we get the familiar shot of the Dreadnok garage albeit from a different angle this time. There’s some fun Easter Eggs as usual with the smashed grape soda cans and a teddy bear for his dear Zarana. That’s an awesome touch and shows the Classified Series team are fans of the comic book as well.

His skill set rankings are 4 in strength, 3s in melee weapons and hand-to-hand combat and a 1 in mercenary. All those check out.

Likeness: Road Pig gets a new, dedicated sculpt, which was necessary to really do justice for his frame.

His head sculpt isn’t as intense as the card art for his Real American Hero figure. Instead, his eyes are more focused possibly making him more intimidating as he’s figuring out what to do with whoever he’s facing. The RAH figure had a thicker torso than the normal one back in the day.

That’s carried over to his Classified Series figure. He’s not muscular, but thicker and wider like a slab of meat.

To lean further into the Dreadnoks’ Mad Max theme, Road Pig has big football pads with plenty of detail. Check out the ties fastening the pads together, the buckles and even scratches into the pads.

Because he’s a Dreadnok, Road Pig doesn’t have the left side of his pads, but he makes up for it as his right pad includes a spiked skull fasted onto it. That right pad also has its own spikes as well.

On his left arm, Road Pig has a mini-crossbow along his wrist. I’m going to envision the bolts have some explosive elements for maximum destruction capabilities. The extra bolts are attached to the holster on his right thigh.

Sticking with this theme, Road Pig wears a studded belt with a pig belt buckle. He’s wearing a studded leather codpiece and leather chaps. There’s some nice texturing details to make these pieces really look like they’re made of leather. For extra protection, he’s got some armored kneepads. The left one has a cyborg warthog, which looks like it could be used as a weapon in a close quarter fight.

His boots seem to have some armored protection as well. They’re probably more useful to Road Pig for stomping his opponents instead of guarding for strikes for someone going for his Achilles. And for good measure they’ve got steel tips as well for when he just wants to kick it.

Scale: Road Pig is by far the tallest of the Dreadnoks, which makes sense given his position in the squad. His size and presence are part of his whole gimmick. He’s even taller than the already formidable looking Gnawgahyde.

I like that it’s not just his height but his overall thickness that makes him look so imposing. The Joes are gonna want to call in Sgt. Slaughter to tangle with Road Pig.

MORE:

Paint: Road Pig has a lot of paint elements starting with his white hair dyed red on both sides. He’s got a 7 o’clock beard going. And there’s a cool scar across the bridge of his nose. Fittingly for a modern biker he’s got some random tattoos starting with the holdover Anarchy tattoo that’s a carry over from the RAH figure.

One is a chain link around his right bicep. Another is a certified grade A ham tattoo. He also has a pig with crossbones. The guy likes his pigs. Finally, he’s got a big garish Dreadnoks tattoo across his chest.

I’m not sure that’s a great addition, but I’ve seen some people already remove it with a little acetone.

The rest of his outfit has really nice detail as well specifically the silver applications on the studs on his belt, cup, buckles, kneepads and boots.

Articulation: Despite his massive size, Road Pig has very fluid articulation. As basically the Dreadnoks tank, Road Pig needs to be able to pull off some solid charging poses and swing his weapons with ease.

He’s a huge figure but has no trouble getting into most poses. I do wish he were able to raise his cinderblock hammer above his head with both hands.

Road Pig has:

  • head
  • neck
  • shoulders (butterfly)
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • mid-torso
  • torso
  • waist
  • hips (ball-jointed)
  • drop down hips
  • knees (double-jointed)
  • ankles

Accessories: Road Pig has a bunch of gear to warrant the deluxe presentation.

First up, he’s got a swappable set of fists for when he just wants to pummel someone.

Road Pig gets an alternate head sculpt which has him yelling with the bonus of showing off his gold teeth.

He’s got a half mask to protect his mouth no doubt as he’s the one most likely to charge into situations with a lot of dust or even chemicals flying around. It has horns protruding out to again give him an advantage in combat.

To add to the intimidation factor, Road Pig gets a helmet. One guess for the theme. Yep, it’s a cyborg warthog/boar. That section is more of a mask with a more traditional biker helmet. He would not be someone anyone would want to see riding in their direction with this thing on.

Like the original figure, Road Pig has a shield. Naturally this one has more detail including a pig breathing fire painted on along with the ominous message of Good Luck and a caution pattern on the lower half. It also has lights, which seems like an extra cheat to blind his opponents as he charges at them.

He also has a meat hook, which seems like a brutal end for someone crossing him. The details here are impressive with the blade and teeth to really cause some damage.

Next up is his signature weapon — his cinderblock hammer.  This is a formidable weapon, but certainly nothing that Road Pig can’t handle. The cinderblock has plenty of damage with chipped off portions.

On the weapon front his final one is a new hammer. It’s shockingly based on that cyborg warthog/boar theme and looks insane. That doesn’t even include the tenderizer portion on the back.

The Dreadnoks have always been an unpredictable gang, but Road Pig’s design makes him — and by proxy — the Dreadnoks look like the most dangerous faction in G.I. Joe. If they’ve got a nut like Road Pig and all of his crazy gear, they are not a joke.

But just to stack the odds further, Road Pig has a pet sidekick, Rawkus. I’m legitimately shocked it’s not a pig of some kind since he clearly favors pigs over everything else.

Rawkus largely uses the Junkyard mold — no problem there as it’s a fantastic dog mold — with a new head sculpt.

He’s a Pit Bull so he’s got a faithful head sculpt for that likeness. His default head sculpt shows off his teeth and generally makes him look far nastier than ‘ol Junk. Rawkus has some great details as well like the scar over his right eye.

Rawkus’ ‘good boy’ head sculpt still looks somewhat intense and menacing.

Like his owner, Rawkus has a strong paint job with a light brown coat and white fading along his neck and stomach.

This is really impressive work.

Worth It? Road Pig goes for the standard figure/pet price of $45. It’s very hard to find fault with that considering how much the team threw into this release.

Target put him on clearance for a period and I got him for $20, which was a crazy deal for this awesome of a figure. Even at the regular price, you’re getting a ton with him.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Road Pig and Rawkus are great additions to the Dreadnok faction and Classified Series in general. RP gets a ton of fun gear. All he’s missing is more of an aggressive, intense head sculpt and the ability to do a complete wallop overhead shot with his hammers.
