Marvel Legends ROM review (2025)

ROM was one of the more shocking reveals at a Marvel Legends panel reveal in a long, long time. Part of that surprise was the seeming unlikelihood of him being freed up due to licensing complications to get in the mix.

He certainly isn’t a character that Hasbro could incrementally make better with each release, so the pressure was on for them to get correct right away.

Let’s see if they made good on potentially making a contender for figure of the year or this is going to be one the more dire Marvel Legends reviews of 2025.

Packaging:  ROM is another member of this special Marvel Legends wave focusing on Marvel Comics milestones. I really dig the packaging, which is set up to look like a comic book complete with the corner box and various images of The Spaceknight in the background.

I also appreciate Hasbro mixing up the accent colors with the blue color scheme. His name tag is done with pink accents to keep changing it up from the other figures.

On the back is the cross sell with the other figures in the wave and a better look at the ROM Spaceknight #1 cover. The bio decently summarizes The Spaceknight’s mission to stop the Dire Wraiths’ invasion.

Likeness: ROM was not a character that Hasbro could even do a makeshift/passable version using existing parts, so they had to give him a wholly original sculpt.

That was essential as he has too many cool design elements from the angular upper torso, the grated midsection and the thigh high flared boots to shortchange any of them.

His head sculpt is also very well done making it look what Parker Brothers envisioned with their figure.

His hands were a tad oversized in the comics so Hasbro could have bumped the size of them up a bit but they’re not diminutive, dainty hands either. The sculptors did make sure not to give ROM individually sculpted fingers.

Scale: He’s listed at 6’1″ though he seemed taller than most of the other heroes to play up the whole “is the Spaceknight a killer robot?” angle.

He also battled the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and alongside and against Power Man & Iron Fist and the X-Men so there’s no shortage of characters to pair him up with or against.

Paint: ROM is mostly a solid color. In the comics it’s a silver/platinum hue, which the ML team conveyed with a shiny silver. Short of using metallic paints this is nicely done.

He does have some red in his grated midsection, but the best paintwork is reserved for his eyes. They’re done to really capture the energy radiating from the blackness of his visor, it’s a really cool effect.

Articulation: ROM has no issues with most of the basic ML poses though his design limits some of the modern upgrades.

Thanks to his blocky design he doesn’t have butterfly shoulder movement, and he lacks waist articulation. He’s got an ab hinge and a rocker torso instead.

Accessories: ROM has a larger accessory count than most figures in this wave.

He comes with both his Neutralizer and Analyzer weapons. The Analyzer helps him determine Dire Wraiths. It is appropriately smaller and has the red translucent front, but it should look like a slot of an equal sign as opposed to one bar.

 

The Neutralizer is bigger and wider and has the three-ringed barrel. It also has the translucent red front with the correct one bar. There is a translucent red energy blast that can fit on either blaster.

He also gets a swappable right fist and gripping left hand. Since I rarely saw him fighting it off with his fists, I won’t complain about just getting one.

Finally, he’s got the mini-comic with a digital print of the ROM Spaceknight #1 cover.

Worth it?  ROM is the standard Marvel Legends price point of $24.99. Some retailers are raising prices on figures so that might not stay the standard for much longer. Given all the unique sculpting I’m impressed the ML team didn’t shortcut anything and really nailed ROM’s look.

I was impressed from the initial reveal of ROM and now having him in hand, I can safely say he doesn’t disappoint and will be revisited come the end of the year voting for best of 2025.
