Box office roundup

Superman repeats atop box office with $57M

Superman flew atop the box office again with $57.3 million. That was easily enough to regain the box office crown after a $125 million debut weekend. With another weekend down, Superman’s total gross is a solid $235 million with $406 million worldwide.

After a strong week’s performance, Superman has already earned the sixth spot in the Top 10 highest grossing films of 2025. It’s closing in on How to Train Your Dragon in fifth place with $247 million, which Superman should surpass by the middle of next week thanks to the strength of its $57 million second weekend.

That’s more than good enough to beat out both Captain America: Brave New World ($200.5 million) and Thunderbolts* ($190 million) as the top comic book film of 2025…for now.

Marvel Studios’ third film for the year, Fantastic Four: First Steps, opens next Friday.

With strong initial buzz after the world premiere, First Steps could either capsize Superman’s momentum or make for a comic book movie event where fans take in a double feature similar to the Barbieheimer phenomenon last year.

Repeating in second place was Jurassic World: Rebirth with an estimated $23 million for its third weekend. Rebirth will overtake Sinners ($278 million) as the year’s third highest grossing films. Along with F1, Sinners remains the lone original property

In third place was I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The third installment of the late 90s teen slasher, which saw the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. joining a new cast, brought in $13 million. That’s not awful considering its $18 million budget, but this likely won’t spark a revival of the franchise.

In fourth place was Smurfs. The latest installment of the cartoon classics isn’t faring well with a middling $12 million against its sizable $58 million budget.

Rounding out the top five is F1: The Movie, which added another $9.6 million to its $154 million domestic haul and $461 million global tally.
