WWE Ultimate Edition The Outsiders review – Scott Hall and Kevin Nash (2024)
The Outsiders immediately turned the tide of the Monday Night Wars with their arrival in WCW. Mattel has delivered some solid Elite figures of Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, but they’re too major to not be included in Mattel’s premiere line — the Ultimate Edition.
My Mattel WWE figures have plenty of Outsiders representation. The trick here is seeing if this Ultimate Edition set will be my definitive, don’t ever need another original nWo look for these guys in the display with their arrival.
Let’s see if these figures will be a prominent fixture in my late 90s WCW display for life or just quick placeholders.
Packaging: I really like these tag team Ultimate Edition packaging. It features both members of the tag team with half of their faces somewhat merging together.
I thought that was unique to The Usos set since they’re twins and you’ve got the whole mirror image thing, but it’s really cool for Hall and Nash too. I love how the Outsiders lettering is positioned between their portraits.
The black and white color scheme is a natural fit for The Outsiders. Over on the back we fittingly get the nWo logo spray painted style.
That’s the outer box. Inside there are two separate Ultimate Edition boxes. It would have been cool just to have a deluxe style UE box for a tag team but it’s fine.
Nash’s reference pictures are weird though as it features him with his dirty blonde hair, which he mostly rocked during the Wolfpac era. That’s a weird gaffe and unlike Mattel. Fortunately, the bio is written as (ahem) sweet as ever for both Outsiders.
Hall’s packaging is fun with the figure action shot having him with the “I’m so scared” expression.
His photo features him playing to the crowd teasing he’s about to tag in Nash.
Likeness: For Hall, Mattel already had the formula for a really good Ultimate Edition figure with the Razor Ramon figure.
This was largely a winning formula save the lower positioning of the head, which “shortened” his neck so I’m glad they didn’t tinker with it.
The default portrait is OK, but it lacks that aura of coolness that Hall gave off so effortlessly.
Nash also has had a UE figure from his WWE days as Diesel. The black was more slimming than the red, which makes the torso joint look weird with the sleeker waist section.
His outfit is accurate with the fringes along the side of his pant legs.
Nash’s default head is joke time Nash while he’s sarcastically dismissing some of the nWo’s opponents.
This is a pretty good likeness and one of the better Nash ones Mattel has done so far.
Scale: Nash is 6’10” while Hall was 6’7” Nash should only be looking up at the 7’1” The Giant. Hall is the same height as Hollywood Hogan. Hall stands just a tad shorter than the 6’6” Lex Luger Ultimate Edition figure, but again, I don’t quibble over an inch or two off with figure scale.

Paint: Both Outsiders have solid paint applications. Hall has his chest hair intact with the face printing doing an excellent job of replicating his five 0’clock shadow.
The blood drips on his tights are set up perfectly allowing the off-center Outsiders to wrap around from the left side.
Nash’s paintjob is minimal since most of the work done for his outfit is handled via the red plastic.
The interior of his singlet could have been a tad sharper to avoid having the flesh paint spraying over onto the singlet lining.
Articulation: Upon joining WCW again, Nash and Hall’s big moves didn’t change.
The Ultimate Edition articulation scheme makes it easy to pull off all of Nash’s moves from the big boot, clotheslines, frame it elbow shots in the corner, the sidewalk slam and his Jackknife powerbomb.
Hall’s offense was more varied. That doesn’t pose too many problems with this setup, but he does have more limitations for some of his submission moves.
Ultimate Edition Scott Hall and Kevin Nash have:
- neck
- bicep
- ball-jointed shoulders
- elbows (double-jointed)
- wrists
- wrist hinge
- torso
- waist
- hips
- thighs
- knees (double-jointed)
- ankles
Accessories: Hall and Nash basically come with identical accessories with one exception.
Both have the standard nWo T-shirt and their so plain but somehow became super iconic Outsiders T-shirt.
I do appreciate Mattel including the T-shirts, but I would have loved if they did The Outsiders’ versions cut like ponchos like they wore them most of the time with no sleeves and essentially draped over their shoulders.
They also have nWo sign hands.
Hall gets a bonus set of hands for his exaggerated shaking taunt.
Each gets a WCW tag team title so if you hadn’t gotten them already, you’re covered now. The detailing on the titles is well done.
Both guys have their respective vests — Hall with his blood dripping to match his ring gear and Nash with his tassels-laden one repainted in red with some black accents. It’s also got a globe with NW spray painted over it as well.
Now it’s time for the extra portraits.
Nash gets the perturbed and yelling sculpts previously used with the Diesel UE figure. Mattel did switch the hair out replacing the shorter Diesel hair sculpt with longer Kevin Nash hair, which makes enough of a difference to work.
I like these sculpts a lot more with Nash than I did as Diesel, which is probably just a function of the longer hair.
Even though Mattel included a bunch of accessories the set feels incomplete since Hall is missing the sneering head sculpt, flat palms and fists that came with the Razor Ramon UE figure. Nash also needed fists. On the plus side, those are easy to add to the figures thanks to the UE Razor and other figures using fists.
Even with three head sculpts, I’m not sure if we get a perfect nWo version of Hall and Nash that conveys their cockiness. For Hall, an ideal one would match the expression used on the box.
Worth It? This set was $74.99, usual price for an Ultimate Edition figure now is $32.99 so this is a pretty sizable markup due to the popularity of the characters. For the higher price, I wish Mattel included more accessories and had different likeness from early Hall and Nash figures.
Rating: 9 out of 10
The Outsiders get their best figures with the UE format, but their likenesses and shirts could have been a bit more accurate.
Where to Get It? The Outsiders are available now on Amazon. The interesting deal is people are finding the set at Ollie’s now for much cheaper so good luck.
