GI Joe Classified Series Heavy Duty review No. 150 (2025)

Heavy Duty was among the unfortunate G.I. Joes to miss out on appearing in GI Joe The Movie. To make things worse, he was prominently featured in the usually awful DIC cartoon shows. At least he had a few appearances in the quality Larry Hama-written GI Joe comics.

Even without much fanfare, Heavy Duty emerged as one of the cooler Joes from the 90s. It probably didn’t hurt that his gear made him look like he was capable of going toe to toe with a Predator, xenomorphs or Starship Trooper bugs. And he wears his hat to the back, the universal sign of a cool character. HD also had a sweet figure in the gone too soon Sigma Six line.

It’s taken Heavy Duty a bit to make it into the Classified Series, but the Hasbro team looks to have done another amazing modern makeovers to make his CS figure one of the standouts of the year.

Let’s see if Heavy Duty hits all the targets or if he’s just firing blanks in that massive rig…

Packaging: As a deluxe figure without a sidekick, Heavy Duty gets the slightly longer box with a wider window. As someone who puts his Joe CS packages on a bookcase, it is slightly annoying seeing how different ones protrude out of the shelf farther than others.

As usual, we get the stats on one side with the QR Code to nowhere and a cool drawing of Heavy Duty on the other side. He’s No. 150 in the line so happy milestone figure, Heavy Duty!

The rear artwork/render has Heavy Duty ready for action while a pair of Night Creepers head his way sneakily in the distance.

His skill set rankings are 4 in heavy weapons (naturally) and a 3 in ordinance, launcher and anti-armor. He’s pretty skilled at his skill sets.

Likeness: Heavy Duty looks like a no-nonsense dude. He kinda reminds me of a thicker Terry Crews with a fade. He’s a product of the 90s before GI Joe went fully extreme so he’s got a shirt with the sleeves ripped off and a gold chain with a Brahama Bull (is HD a fan of The Rock or more likely a shout out to his native hometown of Chicago’s NBA team). To cap off the look, he’s got his hat to the back. I love that as it’s such a 90s design choice.

I can’t recall another Joe with this particular shirt torso so far, but it is getting reused for the Sgt. Slaughter in the two-pack with Mercer (up for pre-order on at my affiliate Amazon). Heavy Duty has a bandolier across his left shoulder with a pair of grenades and what looks like a snakeskin pattern in a section. The CS team really must dig HD to incorporate all these tiny details into the sculpt. He’s got a belt with two grenades strapped to the side ensuring he will never be outgunned.

He has the standard legs with kneepads and regular boots. No truth to the rumor that the boots have smaller guns stuffed inside.

Scale: Heavy Duty was portrayed as a regular sized dude in the cartoon and mountain size in Valor vs. Venom so there’s certainly inconsistencies on his height. He’s taller than most Joes and about eye to eye with Roadblock.

MORE:

Paint: Heavy Duty has a solid paintjob. The light tan shirt doesn’t have any issues while the bandolier is sharply done even with the green snakeskin pattern. His goatee is clean with no fuzziness. Heavy Duty’s hat even has a darker shade of green for the adjustable segment.

The front reads “Shred Head,” which doesn’t seem like a match for a guy who likes classical music, but whatever.

His pants reflect the newer camouflage Joes were getting at that stage in the vintage line. The CS team didn’t skimp out on the triangle pattern camo, which makes for a really cool effect. Heavy Duty’s kneepads are two-tone with a grey for the base and black for the center piece. All around, he gets a very clean paint job.

The only odd aspect is his elbow joint is a darker shade of brown than the rest of his skin tone. HD isn’t the first to have this problem although it seems more obvious with him.

Articulation: Heavy Duty gets the standard high-quality articulation. His joints are nice and tight allowing for good balancing poses — unless he’s wearing all of his gear — and can support some more dynamic posing as well. With his gear on, he’s largely confined to moving his waist and some deeper set stances.

Given the display options for him with his gear, it’s nice to not have to worry about HD getting into fun poses beyond standing there as a mobile gun base platform.

Heavy Duty has:

  • head
  • neck
  • shoulders (butterfly)
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • mid-torso
  • torso
  • waist
  • hips (ball-jointed)
  • drop down hips
  • knees (double-jointed)
  • ankles

Accessories: Heavy Duty is basically the Joe answer to the Cobra/Iron Grenadier’s Metal-Head. HD operates a Man-Portable Heavy Weapons System.

It’s not the kind of get up that would be useful in a situation where he’s got to rush in quickly into a battlefield, but it’s perfect for holding back Cobra or seizing the advantage thanks to his superior firepower.

This isn’t some ridiculous sci-fi take on a weapon as something similar is actually implemented. Granted, those require three people to carry all the gear, but he’s not called Heavy Duty for nothing.

In the RAH line, Heavy Duty’s rig was designed to give him a hernia. This setup with the shoulder straps allows for a better distribution of weight that could help his neck, back and knees later on.

The Classified Series team plussed it up big time as it’s got a number of buttons, panels and plating. has a bunch of gear to aid in his efforts to cause as much mass destruction as possible. There are also some cool paint apps as there’s some scratches along the plating and red paint on the handle buttons. In another cool touch, there’s a bullet hole sculpted and painted as well.

With the basic setup, the MPHWS has two gatling guns on either side. These are nearly as tall as him, so he won’t make it through tight spaces fully geared up. There is an ammo clip that you can feed into the MPHWS as well.

He also has a pair of portable rocket launchers. These can be configured in different ways whether alongside the main rig or at the top above his shoulders. I love the nod to Heavy Duty’s love of classical music with the M202 Quad Burst Invention No. 2 in D-Minor.” That’s a fun touch. I didn’t love as much how snug the gatling canons and guns are to swap out. Mine needed a little heat as I was worried about shearing the peg to swap them on and off.

There are also two more gatling canons placed along the top section. They’re articulated so you can raise and lower them. He’s got plenty to arm them with as he has eight mini-shells and eight blast effects. That’s a nice adjustment from the Metal Head display issue.

To avoid Heavy Duty getting caught in situations where he can’t bring his rig, he’s also got two knives for up close and personal combat. They have nicely detailed handles.

Firing off this massive setup can be damaging to your health, so HD gets a set of headphones/noise dampeners. Additionally, he’s got a small targeting range to fit over his left eye. This is a modern tweak to the big LED screen the original figure used.

He also has a swappable set of fists because he might be unarmed, but Cobra can still get those hands.

Finally, Heavy Duty gets an alternate head sculpt without the hat. This one shows off the fade better but is otherwise the same expression. It might have been cool to get a different one if the hat were removable. Taking a look at this gear, you can definitely see that Heavy Duty has a ton for some major action against Cobra.

Worth It? Heavy Duty is the normal deluxe price of $34.99. With the uncertain financial stakes with the tariffs, I got him earlier than normal, but I definitely don’t feel ripped off. The CS line constantly feels like the best value for their price points.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Heavy Duty gets a top-notch figure. His original design holds back some of his articulation, but the Classified Series team really found a clever way to allow for plenty of customization and fun.
