Image Comics reviews 9/10/25 – Transformers 24, Redcoat 14
Transformers 24
Transformers 24 is an incredible finale to the highly acclaimed and worthy of all the accolades run of writer Daniel Warren Johnson and artist Jorge Corona. This has been two years in the making and Transformers 24 doesn’t disappoint.
Megatron and his Decepticon all-stars of Starscream, Soundwave, Laserbeak, Devestator and Bruticus have largely beaten Optimus Prime and his Autobots. The only thing truly stopping them now is Prime as he faces off with Megatron.
It’s wild how Transformers 24 still has some new ways to pit Optimus Prime against Megatron. Prime taking a running start before transforming into his tractor trailer mode to smash into Megatron? Crazy! Johnson has always been very creative in incorporating wrestling brawls as a guide for the Transformers fight choreography, which Corona picked up on quickly when he began on the title in issue 7.
Johnson also finds the right way to work in some very familiar dialogue for Transformers fans. There are plenty of surprises in Transformers 24 that would be a disservice to spoil. Whatever you’re expecting probably won’t happen, which works out nicely in the context of this story. As usual for Johnson’s stories, not everyone survives Transformers 24, but it might be one of the best deaths in the series.
Corona’s art is superb with big, powerful collisions between the Transformers. The Prime vs Megatron battle had to be given an epic treatment and Corona delivers. Letterer Rus Wooton naturally goes off with incredible sound effect while colorist Mike Spicer unleashes a flurry of bold and bright colors fitting for this epic clash of Transformers leaders.
Transformers 24 doesn’t end the series as Robert Kirkman and Dan Mora are set to take over writing and art duties. They’ve got a Titan-sized task ahead of them to measure up to the lofty standards of Johnson and Corona. This has been a spectacular run and one well worth revisiting over the years.
