Alien: Earth – Observation review S1 E4
Observation is a slow burn episode of Alien: Earth that seems to foreshadow some disastrous happenings playing out rather quickly. The spark doesn’t ignite by the end of Observation, but it’s sizzling oh so close to the end of the fuse.
Wendy is in the medic/repair bay as Arthur and Joe are looking after her. Boy Kavalier is less interested in her wellbeing and more about her newfound ability to hear the aliens chattering to each other. Again, this doesn’t seem like the kind of thing one needs to dabble with, but Boy Kavalier is a trillionaire who’s never been told no and isn’t about to start entertaining dissenting opinions now.
Kirsh is doing his own observation as he watches a replay of Slightly’s conversation with Morrow through Slightly’s optical feed recording. This is a fairly major breach of privacy, but since all of the Lost Boys are children, they don’t truly comprehend what their new existence means.
Morrow is working his ‘friendship’ with Slightly to convince him to retrieve one of the alien eggs for him. That doesn’t sound like a very feasible plan. Even if the child-like Slightly could handle that level of subterfuge to get in and nab the egg, there isn’t much chance he could actually deliver it to Morrow. Seems like Morrow coming there would be a more successful plan. Kirsh questions Slightly about his loyalties to The Lost Boys and tells him “That’s what being an adult is. A constant test.”
Kirsh is fairly busy in Observation. Along with Tootles, Kirsh conducts an experiment with the bizarre eye-shaped alien as it kills and reanimates a goat. Boy Kavalier and Atom Eins watch in the glass-protected observation deck, which is perfectly safe until that one moment when it isn’t and all trouble breaks out.

Arthur talks to Dame Sylvia about his concerns with Boy Kavalier. It’s nice to see someone actually questioning this trillionaire lunatic with seemingly little concern about keeping himself amused and his abhorrence to wearing socks. Before Arthur can make any real progress on an escape plan with his wife, Nibs saunters over to announce she’s pregnant.
Dame tries to help her make sense of her “pregnancy,” but Nibs lashes out then does so again when Dame wants her to open up about her encounter with the eye alien. Rightfully concerned for her safety, Dame summons guards and alerts them to tell their supervisor they have a Level 3 event. If nothing else is clear in Observation it’s that Arthur and Dame understand when it’s not time to mess around.
Boy Kavalier has Atom handle his light work of threatening Joe. If Joe wants to avoid losing all contact with Wendy/Marcy or be stuck with a major bill for his lung transplant, he’s going to need to work as a consultant providing insight on the construct that he thinks is his sister. This is the ugly side of Boy Kavalier’s power as Joe just simply wants to take his sister and have a happy, peaceful life together. That’s not in the cards with BK.
Joe takes the anvil-style “subtle” hint and wishes Rashidi and Siberian well as they head back out on a new mission. That’s not good enough for BK as he manipulates Wendy into helping him figure out what the aliens or saying in exchange for letting Joe stay. Slightly isn’t happy with Joe’s permanent residence either. Kavalier seems oblivious to his machinations developing festering resentment between the hybrids. For his claims of a better humanity, eliminating petty rivalries and creating more beings devoid of emotion like Kirsh seems like the better play.
In the observation deck, Kirsh watches Wendy with Joe’s liver. She communicates in the insect-like chirps and eventually the baby xenomorph bursts from the liver and the “indestructible glass.” Wendy isn’t afraid of this snake-like baby despite nearly getting destroyed by the adult version. Just as interesting, the alien doesn’t attack her when she goes to pet it.
Observation did a lot of table setting as Alien: Earth reaches its halfway point just as a number of subplots seem to be on the verge of exploding. This definitely had a calm before the storm tone.
