Peacemaker – Suture to the Future review S2 E5

Suture to the Future was the inevitable payoff to the first quarter of the season as Chris made the only decision he could have at this point. Now the real question will be if he comes to regret it.

The episode kicks off with a flashback to Rick Flag Jr’s funeral. There’s not a lot of people here though this would have made for an ideal time for a random Bloodsport and Ratcatcher II cameo.

Harcourt is seething looking at Rick’s casket draped in the American flag when Rick Flag Sr. sits behind her. While he knows she can’t tell him who killed his son, it didn’t hurt to ask.

Flag Sr. did know about Jr. and Harcourt and insists that she was special because he loved her as a friend as well as just a random hook up. She vows she’s going to make Flag Jr’s killer pay.

Suture to the Future seems like this will be the time when she makes good on that promise. With ARGUS stationed all around the park with various ideal vantage points to take him out, Harcourt waits on a bench desperately hoping Chris paid attention to her warning — ironically “copacetic” — to stay far away from her.

Naturally, he doesn’t but takes the precaution to stay hidden in order to prevent Judomaster getting a clear shot. That doesn’t stop ARGUS from surrounding Chris and Harcourt has to hastily spring into action to stop Sasha from getting a clean head shot to take him down for good.

Harcourt appeals to Economos’ deep down buried good nature and has him file a report on Chris’ capture. That would prevent Flag Sr. from “disappearing” Chris. That doesn’t stop Flag Sr. from putting a hellacious beatdown on him first. Chris doesn’t fight back and sincerely apologizes, which admittedly shouldn’t mean anything to Flag Sr.

Sasha realizes Chris’ apprehension has been recorded and warns Flag Sr. Fleury commends Economos for doing that, suggesting that he might have a knack for awful nicknames, but Fleury knows that was about to be a bad scene if someone didn’t intervene.

This was all a long game plan from Flag Sr., who figured Harcourt would stop Sasha and his performative beatdown on Chris would make him think he’s sloppy. Sloppy enough to miss Judomaster trailing him to the cabin in case he activates the portal again.

Sasha is impressed in the kind of way that leads to an awkward Kiss Cam HR nightmare suggesting Suture to the Future teased that Flag Jr. was following in his father’s footsteps in regard to inappropriate coworker interaction.

Suture to the Future also wraps up the dying a quick death subplot of Red St Wild’s hunt for Eagly.

MORE:

Michael Rooker was committed to the bit, but it quickly veered a little too silly to make him an enduring character through the back half of the season. Even then it seemed like he was going to play a big role in Suture to the Future since he was able to use his quasi-magical abilities to track down Eagly — and Chris with the portal device as a bonus.

That’s what made it puzzling that Red didn’t contact Sasha and eliminate the need for Flag Sr’s whole show to have Judomaster follow Chris to the cabin.

Red managed to shoot an eagle, but it’s not Eagly, who actually is this mythical prime eagle. Eagly summons all the forest eagles to peck Red to death. So far Eagly has been responsible for two of the most gruesome scenes of this season. Add Suture to the Future as another tally on his ledger.

Chris thinks Harcourt burned him, but Ads vouches for her saying Harcourt is an 11th St Kid and had to have a reason. Ads is such an awesome character and a perfect balance to Chris especially when he starts spiraling.

Despite Ads’ confidence in Harcourt, Chris says he’s fine with all of it and after Ads and Adrian drop him off, he’s ready to go on a fantastic voyage to his Ideal World.

First, he writes a letter to Ads while waiting on Eagly’s return. The Red St. Wild subplot was silly, but Eagly dropping his finger and Chris saying “I’m gonna pretend you just found that” was one of the best moments of Suture to the Future if not the whole season.

Judomaster watches Chris and Eagly go into the portal, but can’t get his call through to Fleury. The 5G connection was already taxed in a forest, but throw in a world hopping portal? No chance he’s getting through. Judomaster does decide to follow, but by the time Ads and Adrian return everyone is gone. Ads recognizes the way Chris set up the portal he can never come back on his own.

In that perfect world, November Rain plays — a solid song choice — as Chris wipes the blood off, symbolizing his fresh, clean start. Keith tells him to suit up as they’ve got a kaiju to stop. What is it with James Gunn and kaiju attacks? Or is the perfect world just a little slower in mirroring events that play out in Chris’ world?

Ads reads Chris’ full letter to the rest of the 11th Street gang. Of note, Chris says he’s not sure redemption is possible for me in this world (most likely true) and that he’s going to overcome his trauma and be the good man there that he was never able to be here. That’s heavy stuff and frames Peacemaker as such a better character than the obnoxious idiot from Season 1. He’s lugging that guilt from killing Flag Jr. and the realization that he killed Harcourt’s only friend has made it somehow, impossibly worse.

In this other world, he can be with his father, his brother and Emilia. It truly is the best dimension ever for him. Ads, Harcourt and the others reach the same conclusion that they’ve gotta bring Chris back. Assuming they can figure out how to make the portal work.

Suture to the Future was a very solid episode that really sets the stage for a strong home stretch.
