McFarlane Toys DC Direct Obsidian action figure review (2025) – Gold Label
Obsidian is one of the few Infinity Inc. members who has gotten a few figures over the years from various DC license holders. McFarlane Toys taking their crack at him makes sense seeing as how Infinity Inc. was one of the first books that Todd McFarlane worked on early in his career.
Let’s shed some light on this figure and see if Obsidian delivers or if he needs to get stuck in the absolute darkest corner of the display shelf.
Packaging: Obsidian gets the clamshell packaging we’ve seen before with the Page Punchers line. Similar to wave mate Mr. Bones, Obsidian has the Gold Label sticker.
He’s part of a new Lithograph Collection so he gets a lithograph with a color image from the Who’s Who entry by Jerry Ordway and a black and white image on the other side. The lithograph is very solid and would display nicely if you’ve got the space.
Likeness: Obsidian is basically a repaint of the Electric Superman figure with a new head sculpt, cape and belt. Sometimes the reuse is just fine although the use of the wrists is weird since McFarlane has plenty of figures with bare wrists. I wonder if McFarlane’s production model allows them to add new elements to existing base bodies but doesn’t allow for mixing and matching of parts? We’ve seen this way too many times for it to be an intentional choice to act as if other character costume parts are invisible.
The new dedicated Obsidian parts are solid. Originally, Obsidian’s cape collar and belt were colored like linked hoops. There was no line work from the artist indicating they weren’t meant to just be solid pieces. Subsequent artists and colorists just make them a solid piece typically colored a lighter blue or grey.
Unlike Mr. Bones, Obsidian’s rounded “hood” section for his cape is more accurate and can be positioned above or lower than his ears. His head sculpt is solid with the mask outline and nose and mouth actually being sculpted. His smiling expression is more neutral than an anguished or angry one, which probably makes it a better option even if Todd wasn’t exactly the happiest hero.
Scale: Obsidian is 5’11” so he should be shorter than most heroes specifically his father the 6’1″ Alan Scott Green Lantern.
Paint: McFarlane figures rarely have paint issues. Obsidian’s costume makes it even harder to screw up. He’s got a strong royal blue contrasting with the deep black.
The circles in his arm and boots are sharply applied with no runoff or stray marks.

Articulation: Obsidian is more of a shadow wraith character who has the usual power package of enhanced stamina and strength as well as the ability to blend into the shadows, fly and become intangible. The Superman mold certainly makes it easy to hit all of the essential Obsidian poses.
Thanks to his soft goods cape, there’s far more potential to strike some dynamic stances truly making a case that this should be the norm for all cape-wearing characters at this point.
Obsidian has:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders
- butterfly shoulders
- elbow
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- waist
- hip
- thigh
- knee
- ankle
- toe
Accessories: Obsidian doesn’t have many essential accessory options, but McFarlane Toys did include some extras.
He gets the flat/flying hands and a curled index finger right hand.
Obsidian also comes with the standard trading card with the bio and black circular stand. His big accessory is the lithograph, which has some decent heft and could make for a decent display piece.
Worth it? At $27.99 with McFarlane Toy Shop shipping rates, Obsidian isn’t going to qualify as a great value. I’d feel much better paying the old $22.99 price for him. He was part of a bundle with Mr. Bones, which took them closer to $26 each with shipping and taxes thrown in.
Rating: 9 out of 10
Obsidian is a solid figure that McFarlane executed very nicely. We definitely need a few more of his Infinity Inc. teammates to join the collection.
