JLU 12

jlu 12

JLU 12 flies by. In one sense that’s a high compliment that so many pages can breeze by like nothing and immediately creating that impatience for the next issue. On the other, it just makes the wait for the next month that much more unbearable.

Either way JLU 12 was a really fun read with writer Mark Waid establishing what the rest of the League is up to while the heavy hitters go off to battle in the KO tournament. Mister Terrific has largely been operating as mission control anyway so it’s not a shock that he takes the lead in organizing nine of the remnant heroes that have stayed at the Watchtower since the events of We Are Yesterday to form a strike force.

This group of heroes including hook hand Aquaman, Power Girl, Owlwoman, Electric Superman, Tim Drake Batman Beyond and more set out to tackle a problem stemming from the end of the world. Waid references a 90s storyline as supervillains decide to cash out their souls for enhanced abilities. That takes this makeshift JLU team to Hell to deal with Neron.

Waid has done a stellar job juggling this large cast. While these characters are new to JLU, Waid has no problem quickly establishing their voice and creating a fun dynamic that should be entertaining over the next few months.

As always, the artwork from Dan Mora is sensational. He’s one of the absolute best in the industry and his highly detailed action sequences and expressive characters have few peers. Paired with the beautiful color work of Tamra Bonvillain and crisp lettering from Ariana Maher, JLU 12 looks incredible.

This adventure has the potential to be an engaging mix of characters that in Waid’s hands could very easily make for a fun JLU spin-0ff if this first taste is any indication.
