MOTU Masterverse New Eternia Trap Jaw review (2023)
Masterverse New Eternia Trap Jaw was a no-brainer pick up for me as I made my order for the NE Tri-Klops. Those two are my favorite secondary henchmen for Skeletor after Beast Man and Mer-Man. I grabbed the Masterverse Revelations Trap Jaw, but the first images of the New Eternia Trap Jaw had me convinced that yet another MOTU upgrade was in my future.
Maybe this one will be my last one for a while as New Eternia Trap Jaw looks amazing. Not to mention different enough from my MOTU Classics and Revelations versions to stand out as my new slightly tweaked classic.
Let’s see if this take on Trap Jaw delivers or if this figure was one where Mattel bit off more than they could chew.
Packaging: The new Masterverse packaging is a work of art and it’s doing a fantastic job of selling the New Eternia story in this instance. Trap Jaw is battling Eternian Royal Guard while on the drawbridge of Castle Grayskull, He-Man is battling Tri-Klops as the Talon Fighter soars off in the distance.
The side image features a portrait of the base figure’s appearance as the full-size image below shows another configuration to mix up his look. On the back, New Eternia Trap Jaw looks to be leaving a chamber in Snake Mountain.
I got an international edition so there’s no bio here, but I have read it.
Naturally, that really has me intrigued about wanting more New Eternia product whether comics or a cartoon series.
Likeness: New Eternia Trap Jaw looks far more menacing than the Revelation figure. He’s got an intimidating head sculpt that gives him a fierce expression even with just his eyes and nose visible from his helmet and jaw attachment. The helmet has some cool paneled details and retains the hoop atop.
His right bionic arm is larger and bulkier than the Classics or Revelation figures. Now it’s attached with a strap to fit alongside his left harness on the side from the front as well as the back.
It has a lot more tech elements than previous editions as well. He also has a sheathe for his sword. Trap Jaw’s left arm has minimal armor plating as well as the familiar dial on the shoulder.
New Eternia Trap Jaw keeps his signature belt with the skull and crossbones with smaller nubs and more cracks to show signs of distress. His holster for his attachments allows them to hang more naturally.
His loincloth is more of the old school and actually looks like fur instead of leather or armor plating. I like that various characters are wearing different style gear instead of a more uniform look for everyone.
Trap Jaw is posed slightly hunched back perhaps as a clue that the arm does weigh him down a bit?
Mattel makes smart reuse choices. In this case, he’s using the shin armor from Man-E-Face with its less bulky knee and shin protection.
Scale: New Eternia Trap Jaw is average height and stands just a bit shorter thanks to his hunched over appearance.

Paint: New Eternia Trap Jaw isn’t as colorful as some other versions, but Mattel’s high quality paint work is evident as usual.
The eye paint conveys a strong amount of ferocity, which goes a long way into making him look more threatening and menacing than previous figures. His skin tone is more of an aqua blue compared to the darker turquoise used for the Revelation figure. That allows for the metallic dark blue armor to stand out better.
Mattel opted for a more muted shade of dark green and metallic lighter green for the belt and thigh armor respectively. There is some really nicely done shading on the belt to show some wear and tear.
His helmet is one shade of magenta, and the jaw section is a darker magenta perhaps from him using that section on metal (and flesh?).
Articulation: New Eternia Trap Jaw features 30 points of articulation. For him, the range of his bionic arm is equally important so he can attack from both a distance and up close and personal.
New Eternia Trap Jaw has:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders
- bicep
- elbow (double-jointed)
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- waist
- hip
- thigh
- knee (double-jointed)
- ankle
Accessories: New Eternia Trap Jaw has plenty of accessories.
Let’s start with his non-bionic weapon — his sword. It’s got a ram’s head cross guard similar to Skeletor’s Havok Staff and a wrapped handle in like an ivory bone shade of white.
The blade has seen better days as it’s got chips and scratches throughout.
He doesn’t need a left-hand fist since he’s taking a bite out of anyone who gets that close to him. Instead, he’s loaded up with different attachments for his arm.
First is the laser blaster. The detailing is impressive with vents, paneling and cylinders around the barrel. There’s some silver paint in the vent section.
Next is his hook attachment. It’s got a strong looking curve and looks like it would do some serious damage.
Finally, he’s got a claw attachment cast in a type of gunmetal shade of grey. It’s articulated and in a fun bonus, you can use the lower portion to swap out with the jaw piece for an alternate look.
Worth it? I happily grabbed New Eternia Trap Jaw for $18 thanks to a solid sale over at Creations Mattel. He’s a quality figure that would easily be worth the $23 price point as well.
Rating: 10 out of 10
