Action Figure Reviews

McFarlane Collector Edition Doctor Mid-Nite action figure review (2025)

Doctor Mid-Nite has one of the cleanest of all the Golden Age heroes. It’s not overly designed for the sake of it yet has enough flourishes to it so it’s a timeless design.

Against the odds it seems like McFarlane Toys is actually going to deliver a pretty solid lineup of Justice Society members from the classic Golden Age run to the Bronze Age and 90s run. Doctor Mid-Nite was a core member of those lineups so his arrival in the Collector Edition line provides another core member to the JSA.

Let’s see if the good doctor is fit enough to be one of the standout releases for McFarlane or needs to take two and come back in the morning.

Packaging:  With the Collector Edition line, the silver foil replaces the white. The box is slightly larger though that doesn’t mean as much since the accessories aren’t as plentiful.

The window does make it easy to see the figure and all of the accessories while the side text states this is indeed the JSA-inspired version of Doctor Mid-Nite. Packaging artwork can be a sore spot for this line thanks to weird inconsistencies. That strikes again as the rear artwork features Pieter Cross aka Dr. Midnite. This is such a weird thing to constantly mess up and the main reason I just dump the packaging from this line.

Likeness: Doctor Mid-Nite’s classic costume is about 95% perfect. His head sculpt looks great with a calm expression and a cowl with a sculpted crescent moon and goggles that don’t show a connecting point. His tunic has three crescent moons serving as clasps leading to his belt buckle that leaves a faint “skirt” piece below.

Doctor Mid-Nite has buccaneer boots and flared gloves. He’s also got a soft goods cape. The only issue is his cape should be fastened at his collarbone instead of being placed behind his shoulders. This is a minor aesthetic deal, but it does make a difference. See how this looks compared to the DC Classics Doctor Mid-Nite with the correct cape placement. With the exception of that issue, this is a really nicely done Doctor Mid-Nite.

Scale: Doctor Mid-Nite should stand about eye to eye with his fellow JSA teammates as he’s an average height character at 6′. As always with McFarlane’s DC Multiverse, scale is only a suggestion and not a hard and fast rule, but he lines up well next to Green Lantern Alan Scott, Wildcat, Hourman and Dr. Fate.

Paint: McFarlane figures usually have pristine paint jobs. Doctor Mid-Nite doesn’t have as demanding a costume paint-wise as some other characters, but there is some precise detail work that could be a problem. Specifically, the crescent moons, the goggles and belt buckle. Some red does bleed over onto the top of the buckle, but otherwise it’s clean.

I liked the effect with his goggles where it has some gradients of blue diagonally striped across simulating light reflecting off of them.  For the rest of the figure, the parts are molded in their respective colors so there’s not too many opportunities for shoddy paintwork.

He has a chase painted to look more like Pieter Cross’ version, but it’s lacking some costume details that would really make for an effective variant.

MORE:

Articulation: As a classic Golden Age hero, Doctor Mid-Nite just needs to be able to punch out a few bad guys. He’s also into martial arts to some degree so the skirt piece length helps with not impairing a solid looking side or straight kick.

With the regular 22 points of articulation, Doctor Mid-Nite can hit a variety of poses. The soft goods cape definitely aids in making his poses more dynamic, which is why they really should be the norm for all these figures at this point.

Accessories: Doctor Mid-Nite shows the impact of rising costs have impacted the Collector Edition line, which previously was treated like a premium subset in the DC Multiverse line.

Earlier this year, Doctor Mid-Nite would have come with some swappable face plates for different expressions and maybe a Blackout Bomb or two. Now, he gets a swappable set of gripping hands, a pointing right hand and an open left hand.

On the plus side, his real essential accessory — his pet owl, Hooty, is included and can rest on his wrist with little trouble.

As usual, he does come with the trading card and black circular stand.

Worth it?  Collector Edition figures were overpriced at $30 earlier this year. At $34.99, the value is really hard to see considering the accessory allotment is the same as a regular Multiverse release. Maybe this is McFarlane’s means of getting out a less desirable figure that couldn’t be sold at retail.

The prices for Collector Edition figures haven’t dropped like they were a few years back so it’s basically a “get him now or pay more later” situation.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Doctor Mid-Nite really benefits from being a tremendous figure in the Multiverse line. From the heroic portrait to the soft goods cape and brighter colors, this is one of the best offerings from McFarlane in 2025.
