Superman 32

Superman is a key crossover title in the DC KO story. With so many titles decked out with the DC KO banner, it might be hard to determine what is or isn’t critical to supplementing the story told in the main title.

For the first half of this issue, writer Joshua Williamson explains how Lex Luthor and his smaller-scale Legion of Doom entered themselves in the tournament. It’s pretty clever and Williamson seems to fully commit now to Luthor reverting to the side of the non-angels again. It’s been a while since a Secret Society of Super Villains title, but Williamson could probably write a killer Legion of Doom series.

The second half of the issue finds Superboy Prime and Lois Lane, whose Superwoman powers have temporarily returned, battling Darkseid’s Dark Legion. Williamson fortunately does not let the issue go without addressing why Superboy Prime isn’t in a tournament to the death.

Artists Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira get a nice mixture of story progression and some action sequences to illustrate. Barrows has been a fixture on the Superman titles for years and his work remains strong with Ferreira always providing clean embellishments. Alejandro Sanchez’s colors is clean with some strong fiery effects and dimension traveling lighting. Letterer Ariana Maher frames the dialogue smoothly and has some fun sound effect fonts in play as well.

This is a key DC KO 2 crossover that is a welcome expansion of the main title’s story while providing an essential mission for Lois and Superboy Prime.
