Action Figure Reviews

G.I. Joe Classified Series Hawk with MMS action figure review No.182 (2025)

Hawk was the leader of the GI Joe team with GI Joe #1, which immediately hooked me on the series. That made me very confused when Duke showed up as almost a Hawk stand-in leading the team in the first GI Joe cartoon mini-series. That felt like a disservice to the guy who led the team through some of those early formulative year and 10 months before Duke’s arrival in the comics.

When Hasbro gave Hawk a makeover as Gen. Hawk it was one of the better updates in the Real American Hero line, so it wasn’t shocking his initial Classified Series figure was in that attire. Still, I was hoping we’d see Hawk in his classic look when he really was just one of the Joes. Hasbro shocked me with the reveal of Col. Hawk during Yo Joe June. And he wasn’t alone as he was packed with the Mobile Missile System like his original RAH figure.

With most of the OG13 knocked out, I was worried their field leader wouldn’t get his vintage figure, but the CS team came through once again. Let’s see if this version of Hawk soars or if he’s destined to never get promoted to a prime spot on the display.

Packaging: Hasbro have Hawk the standard figure/vehicle treatment, so the package has a render image with him and the MMS set for battle and a plastic window of the figure on the right side — just like the classic presentation.

In a nice nod to the original figure, Hawk is No. 182 — the same year as the line’s debut. The right side features a larger image of Hawk with his skill stats and the QR Code to nowhere. Along the left is the full image of the artwork with a telling Hawk leading the troops into action.

Over on the back is a breakdown of all of the accessories and a few select images of the detailed sticker applications of the MMS.

For his skill set, Hawk ranks a 4 in artillery, leader and tactics and a 2 in light weapons.

Likeness: Hawk is mostly a reuse of the Stalker/Snake Eyes mold with new hands with a new chest pad and head sculpt. That’s what the majority of the OG13 figures looked like so the reuse is no issue.

His head sculpt is fantastic giving Hawk a steely-focused expression as a man ready to lead the charge into whatever battle awaits with Cobra.

The chest armor suggests a tease of what could be in store for CS Flash and Grand Slam with a smaller waffle pattern with an overlay in the center. It has a holster on the left side and a name plate at the top.

Scale: Hawk is the same height as your average Joe so he should be eye to eye with Stalker, Grunt, Rock n Roll and Clutch. He should be looking up at Gung Ho and Roadblock.

MORE:

Paint: Hawk doesn’t have a demanding paint job in this original attire. He’s got the basic all green attire with black leather straps. His original figure had silver straps to set him apart from the other Joes.

I wouldn’t have minded the silver straps on the chest armor, but the CS team did pay homage to the RAH figure by painting his sleeve pockets silver. Hasbro did a nice job of adding a brown wash particularly around the roots of Hawk’s hair to help explain why it would turn fully brown later on.

Articulation: The Stalker mold is great for posing and Hawk has no problem hitting any poses thanks to his chest pad stopping right at the torso hinge.

Accessories: Seeing as how this is a figure/quasi-vehicle pack, I wasn’t expecting Hawk to have a ton of gear, but he’s got a solid number of accessories.

First, he’s got the modern base helmet with a visor and mic piece. This is a nod to his original figure.

Hawk’s got plenty of weapons starting with his knife.

This fits into a sheath in the backpack previously used with Stalker.

He’s got two smaller pistols. One fits into the holster on the chest armor and the other in a holster on the back of his belt.

Next up is an M-16, which works for his default weapon. He’s also got the XMLR-3A laser rifle.

Finally, he’s got the M32 Pulverizer.

The final “accessory” in this set is the Mobile Missile System.

This is a repaint of the Cobra HMS, which in fairness should have debuted after the MMS in 1985. It’s a fairly large mini-vehicle station with a solid base including folding stabilizers and a control panel.

Details on the MMS are solid and look better in the olive green. Paint apps are also well done with red and grey accents, lights and a bunch of tampos with caution signs throughout. You can never truly be too cautious with a big missile system nearby.

Impressively, there’s some articulation to the MMS as well.

The base can elevate and swivel and the stabilizing legs and support legs fold, the wheels move and it can be towed by other Joe vehicles…or in this case, just the VAMP and AWE Striker. It’s a start!

The MMS also has its share of accessories. First are the three missiles that plug into the various spots. Once again, the missile exhaust fumes — a longer and short one — are included with an orange and white gradient.

Finally, there’s the four blast effects that can be positioned if you’ve got the missiles aiming upwards. These effects are cool in general, but they don’t seem to ever make much sense for the vehicle/weapon.

Worth It?  This set is $75 meaning Hawk would be a regular $25 figure, and the MMS is $54, which is ironically the price you can get the HMS and the HISS Techno Viper from Hasbro Pulse. This stands a decent job of being discounted, but I didn’t want to chance it.

Rating: 10 out of 10

Getting such a fantastic Hawk figure was solid enough, but the MMS is a welcome third vehicle/playset for the OG 13 squad.
