GI Joe Classified Series Sci-Fi action figure review No. 177 (2025)

Sci-Fi was part of replacement Joes that started with the 1985 line and continued into the 86 squad. As a laser trooper, Sci-Fi was clearly intended to be the replacement for Flash. While I dug Sci-Fi’s futuristic look, there was no way he was replacing Flash — one of my early Joe favorites.

One thing working for Sci-Fi though is he makes his debut in the Classified Series line ahead of the original laser trooper. His arrival also brings the 86 solo card roster that much closer to completion.

Let’s see if Sci-Fi hits the target or if he’s ripe to have his thunder stolen once Flash arrives.

Packaging: Sci-Fi gets the usual packaging. He’s No. 177 in the line, which shows how much momentum this new take on GI Joe has gained over the last few years.

The main artwork on the side features Sci-Fi with his alternate look, which continues to puzzle me since the CS line has skewed closer to the classic takes on the characters for years now. Over on the other side it’s the smaller version of the stats along with the QR Code to nowhere.

On the back is a cool render of Sci-Fi taking aim with his laser burst sparking up.

His skill sets naturally fit his specialty. He’s got a 4 in energy weapons and 2s in marksman, electrical engineering and anti-armor.

Likeness: Sci-Fi has a very cool outfit and has a completely original sculpt. He has so many distinct elements to his costume so trying to reuse existing sculpted parts would have been tricky.

His helmet is fully removable, so his full portrait is visible in his classic gear. The head sculpt is solid and conveys more of a focused, uptight personality, which seems exactly like how he would look if Sci-Fi were a real person.

Some of the CS head sculpts are good, the best ones show some character and the standouts offer new insight to a character’s personalities. Sci-Fi is definitely the latter.

 

In keeping with his more future-focused attire, Sci-Fi has a streamlined hazmat-style outfit likely to better protect against the energy blasts radiation emitting from his rifle. The gear has a two-part setup with a green textured outer portion and a vertical lined black section. Sci-Fi’s original figure in the Real American Hero line was mostly a green bodysuit with a ribbed black inner thigh section.

As usual, the Classified Series team went all out in enhancing that design, which already got a tremendous redesign in the 30th anniversary line. His slotted chest piece armor has excellent detail with translucent plastic. The black inner section now extends to his arms. He’s got two identical silver gauntlets for greater protection.

The lower portion of his outfit has more details with pouches and knobs leading to his armor that extends from his kneepads to his shins. This is an impressive bit of sculpting for a character who isn’t regarded as a big fan favorite proving everyone gets equal high-quality work in the Classified Series line.

Scale: Sci-Fi was portrayed as a regular guy although he looks somewhat bulkier compared to other Joes thanks to his protective gear. I wish he were more of the same height as Beach-Head and Leatherneck instead of being closer to Sgt. Slaughter. That’s my biggest gripe with him.

Paint: The CS team has been muting some of the more vibrant colors of the RAH figures for the line and Sci-Fi is no different. His outfit is less highlighter hue and more of a light green. Spreading out the inner lining of the outfit also provides more avenues to incorporate more black paint into the costume.

His gauntlets have gone from black to silver, a departure from other paint jobs where a brighter color is replaced by a darker one. It works for Sci-Fi, who does keep his black gloves. All of the paintwork is nice and pristine including the smaller black panels and the silver screws on his thigh.

It looks like the CS team gave him a faint start of a mustache as well, which breaks up the beard or bust facial hair for most of the Joes.

Articulation: Sci-Fi doesn’t have a specialty that requires him to shoot on the move so it’s important that he can just properly aim his laser rifle and potentially hit some shooting while resting on one knee poses per the old school card art.

Sci-Fi has the usual solid articulation and thanks to the length of the cord for his laser rifle, he’s not restricted from obvious aiming poses.

Accessories: Sci-Fi gets a slew of worthwhile accessories.

First is his laser rifle. It’s got some nice detail with a larger and smaller barrel and several paint apps with silver plating and a gold LED gauge.

He’s got a cord connecting the blaster and his backpack. It’s shaped somewhat like a tuning fork with silver paneling on the bottom half.

It definitely stays true to his CS aesthetic. I appreciate the mix of black and silver on the pack.

To spice it up a bit, Sci-Fi has two helmet display options. The first is his traditional visor, which allows you to see his mouth like the RAH figure.

That’s the route I’ll be going with for my figure.

For another option, the CS team included a full translucent face plate. If protection from laser exposure is the plan, this makes the most sense.

It’s a cool option and I love that the team keeps things of little touches to upgrade on the RAH figures. Finally, he gets a blast burst and a laser stream for his rifle. The ball burst effect plugs into the rifle with an opening for the stream. You can also plug the stream directly into the rifle. That’s a really fun addition.

Worth It? Sci-Fi was $27.99, the new price point for the CS line. Of all the lines jumping to this new “normal” price, at least the CS team is trying to justify the increase with new sculpts and plenty of accessories. Some places have him for the older $25, which is when he becomes a really good deal.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Sci-Fi’s height is the only issue I’ve got with an otherwise exceptional figure. The CS team really did a great job on him and he’s one of the 2025 standouts.
