Absolute Batman Ark M 1

absolute batman ark m 1

Absolute Batman Ark M 1 is another story peeling back some of the mysteries of the Absolute Batman corner of the Absolute Universe. Regular writer Scott Snyder is joined by Frank Tieri for the last account of Amadeus Arkham.

Arkham had a difficult childhood as a result of a tragedy sparked by the end of the Civil War. This set Amadeus on a path to ensure that others wouldn’t meet a similar fate. Snyder and Tieri use Absolute Batman Ark M 1 as a bit of an analogy for Bruce Wayne as he attempts to do the same in contemporary Gotham.

Arkham is relaying his past as he’s in the process of selling the asylum to an interested new party. Artist Joshua Hixson doesn’t particular disguise the new buyer’s identity as he’s been a prominent figure in many Absolute Batman stories. For Absolute Batman Ark M 1, he takes on a co-starring role as some of his origin is revealed as well. Hixson’s art is solid for this special issue as it doesn’t require elaborate fight choreography as much as it does dramatic camera angles, which Hixson does very well.

MORE:

Colorist Roman Stevens gives Absolute Batman Ark M 1 a moody atmosphere with a darker, haunting color palette and shadowy details. Letterer Clayton Cowles has some fun working in a script style font for Arkham’s journals while keeping the text easy to read.

Snyder and Tieri don’t just use Absolute Batman Ark M 1 as a look back at the past. The issue also foreshadows some familiar names set for their Absolute Universe debuts including some major fan favorite villains.

Absolute Batman Ark M 1 made very effective use of the special edition format. Hopefully Snyder will utilize this more for one-off stories that provide character development for background players while allowing the main title to play out without interruption.
