Skeleton Crew – We’re Going to Be in So Much Trouble review S1 E7

We’re Going to Be in So Much Trouble marked the penultimate episode of Skeleton Crew with the series’ trademark fun along with a surprisingly darker development.

Frustrated over not making any progress on finding their children going through official channels, the parents — led by Wendle and Fara — stage a little adventure of their own. They’re able to get a communication out beyond At Attan in order to get some word out to their children.

With the fun ride winding down, Wim is not at all happy about going back home and returning to his boring, predictable normal life. In fairness, Wim has been able to have a wild ride with his BFF and two new friends battling pirates, scoundrels and droids.

It’s the opposite of an adrenaline rush to be stuck on one planet for the rest of his life. It’d be impossible for anyone, particularly a child who got his first taste of the galaxy to be satisfied with the idea of never making similar experiences again.

The pirates are making a beeline at the same time as the kids in the Onyx Cinder get to At Attin’s defense grid, a complex system designed to keep uninvited guests away. There certainly are enough precautions set up to keep At Attin safe though So Much Trouble certainly establishes that these safeguards aren’t going to be of much help for much longer.

Jod likewise is trying to navigate his own precarious situation. His life depends on getting Brutus and the pirates to At Attin or he’s going to be taking a quick trip out the airlock. Jod convinces Brutus to go through the defense grid storm, which doesn’t work as smoothly in one of the more brutal scenes of So Much Trouble.

Snagging the Onyx Cinder in a tractor beam proved to be a far more successful strategy. The kids manage to hide from their would-be captors long enough for KB to use some of the ship’s defensive measures to ensnare Brutus.

That was all the opening Jod needed. He coldly kills his treacherous first mate and reasserts command over his crew. It was either kill Brutus or walk the space plank. Not a tough decision. So Much Trouble does have a nice emotional moment as the kids see the message from their parents. They’re able to regain SM33’s assistance as he incapacitates Jod and the pirates. It seemed odd that he could lay out the pirate crew one moment after a few shots took him out earlier.

Fern is helpfully the one this episode to mention the episode title stating “we’re going to be in so much trouble” as they hurry back into the Onyx Cinder and head for home. But they did make the one rookie adventurer mistake, which feels like the gateway for so much trouble, in not checking the ship to make sure there were no stowaways.

In this case it was the worst possible one as Jod arrives, using his lightsaber to decapitate SM 33. Well, that should definitely do it for the droid. Threatening the kids’ parents, Jod has them play along that he is a republic emissary. Jod plans to scope out the loot in At Attin and then signal the rest of the crew to come get it once he deactivates the defense grid.

Some of the droids take Jod down to the mint’s vault and is thrilled to see the legends were true. There’s more money than he could possibly spend in one lifetime. The kids reunite with their families just as Jod emerges from the vault and ignites his lightsaber. Now that’s a solid way to do a cliffhanger!

So Much Trouble makes for another terrific Jude Law showcase as he gives Jod so much more depth than a bumbling, quirky scoundrel. He’s a competent and ruthless villain who doesn’t feel the need to treat the kids as anything more than pawns to achieve his goal. With it now in sight, there’s no telling what Jod will do to ensure he gets everything he’s always desired.
