Marvel Legends X-Men 97 Storm and Wolverine review (2025)
With X-Men 97 Storm and Wolverine cartoon looks, Hasbro was able to revisit the classic costumes for the Marvel Legends line.
Wolverine had his brown and orange gold outfit featured recently enough in the Secret Wars line though it was more of a figure homage. The X-Men 97 Storm costume was a direct upgrade of her original costume with some necessary articulation upgrades.
Let’s see if this set is ready to cut up or if it’s a gloomy forecast.
Packaging: The X-Men’97 two-packs setup features an orange and yellow mid-section, black top and blue bottom color combination.
On either side is animation style artwork of X-Men 97 Storm and Wolverine. The back features a shot of both figures and the other two X-Men 97 two-packs.
Likeness: X-Men 97 Storm mostly reuses the solid body from the Storm/Thunderbird two-pack. The big differences are a new head sculpt and new arms with updated bicep articulation.
I like the new face sculpt as it has a bit more personality.
The hair sculpt is less detailed than the previous Storm likely to convey the simplified aesthetic of the cartoon. I don’t love it, but I understand.
Storm’s physique is still not properly conveyed with this slender build, but I wasn’t expecting an all-new body here.
Wolverine uses the X-Men 97 Wolverine mold, which is the best in scale base for Logan. He also has a new head sculpt with a yelling expression.
It’s fine for an alternate portrait but not the main one. At least there’s options for Wolverine head sculpts…
Scale: X-Men 97 Storm is scaled properly as she’s about eye to eye with Cyclops and Banshee.
Wolverine is appropriately shorter than everyone else. No Hugh Jackman scaling here, just the way I like it.

Paint: X-Men 97 Storm features a relatively clean paint job besides the yellow trim of her cape. Trying to get yellow onto a nearly all black glossy surface would be hard enough, but trying to stay within the lines of a small trim apparently is asking too much. That’s not just a Hasbro issue though so it’s about what I expected.
Her skin tone is slightly darker than the previous Classic Storm figure and her white hair look even starker and brighter with the contrast. One annoying area with the paintjob is that Storm’s irises aren’t painted in her eyes per her cartoon look. In the comics, her irises are painted depending on the colorist though during this outfit’s heyday, storied X-Men colorist Glynis Wein kept her eyes a solid white.
Wolverine’s skin tone is a darker peach, which isn’t the best option considering the outfit’s color scheme. It didn’t more distinction with the orange gold and brown. Similar to the Secret Wars figure (available on Amazon), the brown strip through his torso tailor off too quickly making it too narrow. The brown really should extend throughout his ab crunch area with more brown showing than orange gold more like the Krakoa-era figure.
Like Cyclops, his trunks are so short they look more like Speedos than boxer briefs. His forearm hair is intact and came out very clean.
Articulation: Nothing major changed for the Wolverine figure. This base body is great for posing as it’s capable of all of the signature Wolverine slashes, stabs and lunges. And he can be positioned easily enough for a Fastball Special to crash through a Sentinel’s head.
He’s a lot of fun to pose and launch into battle.
Storm is largely the same as well with the addition of the bicep joint and true double-jointed elbows. Those are definite upgrades. Her default cape is somewhat restrictive to dramatic posing and is one of the instances where a soft goods cape would make for a huge improvement to her poseability.
Her neck joint and torso still needed better back and forth movement, as she isn’t able to hit the best flying poses.
X-Men 97 Storm and Wolverine have:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders (butterfly shoulders)
- bicep
- elbow (double-jointed)
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso (rocker)
- hip
- thigh
- knee (double-jointed)
- ankle
Accessories: X-Men 97 Storm and Wolverine get a decent number of accessories.
Storm has an intense alternate head sculpt with her hair flowing back in one direction. It’s not as wild as the first classic figure though there are some waves and motion to it.
X-Men 97 Storm also gets a pair of lighting strike hands so she’s not always lightning raging out. Without fixing the shriveled fingers look, the ML team did improve on the look by simply making the lighting gradient go down her fingers instead of painting them like her skin tone.
It looks better and makes more sense for the lighting ridges sculpted onto the fingers.
Wolverine gets a set of claw extended hands. That is a no-brainer of course and they swap just fine. His other accessory is his secondary portrait — an unmasked scowling head sculpt.
It’s decent enough, but thanks to the curious decision to make his skin tone different, it can’t be used with the previous X-Men 97 Wolverine.
Worth it? Initially, the set was the reasonable $49,99 price point — the same price as two Marvel Legends. Hasbro is jacking prices up so anyone that didn’t get the set pre-ordered now has to pay $57.99, a ridiculous increase. Neither figure has enough changes to warrant this kind of price hike.
Rating: 8.5 out of 10
X-Men 97 Storm is a nice upgrade over the first pack despite the cartoonish hair sculpt. Wolverine is mostly good, but the skin tone and lack of an alternate neutral head sculpt ding him down.
