McFarlane Toys DC Digital Red Tornado review (2025)

Red Tornado got a Gold Label figure from McFarlane Toys in 2023. It was good enough in the event we never got a classic version. Maybe in the sense of getting an easy layup repaint that would earn some easy points with collectors. For those who got the initial version and wanted one with enough changes to warrant the double-dip.

Let’s see if this version of Red Tornado leaves me spinning or simply just spins out.

Packaging: The DC Direct window is wider with a turquoise and dark blue color scheme. I like this presentation better than the normal black and white setup used for the standard Multiverse line.

Red Tornado again gets the Gold Label designation for some reason. He does get a fun Red Tornado logo on the front. The side labels his as the Bronze Age version of Reddy.

Over on the back, is a cool bit of artwork from presumably Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez.

Likeness: This is the fully classic version of Red Tornado complete with the flared gloves and high collar cape. This time it’s made out of soft goods allowing it to fit more naturally and not be a shelf hog with the posed plastic cape.

In all other regards, this is the same figure as the Multiverse one utilizing the same head sculpt and body with the exception of the trunk piece.

The original Red Tornado used the Alan Scott Green Lantern mold, which had a sculpted belt. That’s thankfully removed for this version.

Scale: Red Tornado should be right around the same height as Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern and Aquaman. He’s about eye level with Batman and The Flash although he will be looking up at Wonder Woman, Firestorm and Superman.

He’s an android so he definitely shouldn’t be the shortest member of the Justice League.

MORE:

Paint: For this version, McFarlane went with a much brighter color scheme with vibrant reds and yellows instead of the dark candy apple red and gold.

This is all very cleanly applied, which is impressive given the nuisance that trying to apply yellow linework onto red can be with some figures. With the original figure, the paintjob featured a lot of black around his eyes, which gave him a more sinister, almost villainous appearance.

Articulation: Red Tornado doesn’t need to do any punches or kicks as he’s absolutely a gesturing distance fighter. With no restrictions with the hard plastic cape, he’s able to hit for dynamic poses to simulate him tossing around some tornado bursts or flying in the center of a tornado cone.

Red Tornado has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders (butterfly joint)
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • waist
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle
  • toe

Accessories: McFarlane Toys usually don’t get a ton of accessories. Red Tornado gets less than the norm as he just has a set of swappable fists.

As is the norm for the DC Digital figures, Reddy gets the usual trading card and the digital redemption card. Finally, he’s got the DC Digital stand. He’s missing the smaller tornado that came with the previous version. That really should have been included here unless the soft goods cape significantly impacted the cost.

Worth it? McFarlane Toys has raised the prices on figures, so the originally higher priced Digital figures are now $27.99. Given the below average number of accessories that value isn’t great.

Rating: 10 out of 10

Red Tornado is a worthwhile upgrade from the original one thanks to the brighter colors and soft goods cape. He’s definitely worth seeking out for your classic JLA.
