Marvel Legends AOA Gambit figure review (2025) – BAF Nemesis wave

The Age of Apocalypse, aka AOA Gambit, finally provides another member of the vast ensemble from one of the X-Men’s most popular alternate timeline storylines in the Marvel Legends line.

After Rogue chose Magneto, Gambit left the X-Men and formed a group of his own, The X-Ternals with Jubilee, Guido, Lily Cheney and Sunspot. That was a pretty fun limited series and with a relatively smaller roster, I’m now pulling for the Marvel Legends team to finish the rest of Gambit’s squad.

Let’s see if Remy gets an ace of a figure or if his luck is all run out with a lousy hand.

Packaging: The Nemesis wave was one of a handful of Build a Figure waves for 2025. This wave features the boxier packaging style with a predominantly black color scheme with yellow and red accents and an orange burst with the BAF info.

I appreciate the ML team mixing up the artwork and not just using the same image on the sides and the back. The bio offers a very broad summary of AOA Gambit’s role during the Age of Apocalypse storyline.

Likeness: AOA Gambit is nearly an exact translation of Gambit’s look during this arc. His head sculpt is great and is arguably the best one Hasbro has done in the Marvel Legends line yet. The expression is calm yet offers a bit more of a roguish-scoundrel demeanor. The sculpt does an excellent job of capturing his personality.

His hair is higher and angled to the right side, propped up by his headband instead of a cowl. I think the ML team used the Vulcan torso and legs with some new arms and boots. The arms have segmented leather-like armor on the outside that leads into wrapped/armored gloves. He’s got a band around his thigh and unique kneepads. AOA Gambit rocks some nicely detailed boots with clasps and straps.

The one area that’s a bit of a problem is his half-cape. It’s made of a harder plastic and doesn’t plug in well to anything to retain its functionality. From a shelf display perspective, the cape looks great, but it is a nuisance with Gambit’s articulation.

Scale: AOA Gambit retains the regular universe’s taller than average height though he’s not as tall as the AOA Magneto. He’s taller than Rogue but looks up to fellow X-Men teammates, Sabretooth and Colossus. The original AOA X-Men team was pretty cool, and we nearly have them all besides a true AOA Nightcrawler.

Paint: AOA Gambit has a sharp vibrant blue costume with brown for the leather armor, belt (with a gold buckle), knee pads and boots. The brown elements could have used a wash just to dirty them up some as his outfit overall looks a bit too clean. His cape does catch the shadows well enough to give the impression of a wash, which looks pretty cool.

It’s faint, but Gambit does have his trademark stubble. That probably could have been a bit more pronounced as well.

Articulation: Gambit absolutely needs a killer range of motion for his attack style. The mold allows for easy posing, but the cape is a little clunky and gets in the way for more dynamic poses.

You can position it out of the way for some poses, but this is an instance where the ML team ought to borrow a page out of the Star Wars team’s playbook and use soft good elements as needed to help improve some figures’ movements.

Accessories: AOA Gambit doesn’t get a slew of accessories but has the essentials.

He also has a set of swappable fists. As expected, he comes with his bo staff — the same one that Hasbro has used with other Gambit figures.

Finally, AOA Gambit comes with the right leg of the Build-A-Figure Nemesis.

Worth it?  I was able to get AOA Gambit on sale for $15. That’s a killer deal for a very quality figure.

AOA Gambit is pretty close to being perfect. He really needed a soft goods cloak to make his gear look as cool as it did in Age of Apocalypse. Hopefully the ML team will focus on getting more of the X-Ternals done in 2026.
