Paradise – Another Day in Paradise review S2 E3
Another Day in Paradise was almost a brilliant episode to perfectly cap Paradise’s second season debut. A pair of very questionable final act decisions undermined what was shaping up to be another essential perfect installment. Despite those issues, Another Day in Paradise was full of shocking twists and intriguing subplots to keep viewers tuned in every week going forward.
Sinatra awakens after a month in an induced coma to find a lot has changed. President Baines (Matt Malloy) is throwing his new power around by having a police force round up the criminal element — in this case it’s Jeremy’s young radicals group spray painting X in various places in honor of Xavier.
This would certainly be taboo as a flashback reveals Jane putting on her crying face to tell Xavier and Robinson that Sinatra is still alive. While Robinson doesn’t seem like she’s buying Jane’s crocodile tears, Xavier doesn’t need a gift receipt for his purchase. He offers to Dark Knight it by taking the blame (or credit?) for shooting Sinatra as he won’t see another day in paradise while he begins the search for Teri. This doesn’t seem like the best idea…
Jane rushes to the hospital to figure out if Sinatra remembers she was the one who shot her. This marked the first of several Jane-related frustrating moments in Another Day. Sinatra keeping her cards close to the vest about knowing Jane shot her could have been an intriguing subplot pitting two of the show’s most dangerous players against each other.
Instead, Jane seems to be back carrying out Sinatra’s agenda right down to being the agent to bring her into the interrogation room under Baines’ supervision. Baines is having this temper tantrum because his latest glorious idea is to create seasons or at least summer. The tech experts warn that’s not feasible since Sinatra has another project that’s siphoning off some of Paradise’s resources already.
Cue up another flashback to Sam’s first encounter with doomsday prognosticator Dr. Logue (Geoffrey Arend). He’s not impressed with her billionaire money and drops the huge bombshell that the initial natural disaster he predicted is just the opening salvo. Another catastrophic event would follow years later that will wipe out the rest of the population.
Another flashback proves in great detail that dead characters are hardly gone from Paradise entirely. Another staple of Lost (check out the series on Amazon Prime). Cal won the presidency and promises Sam that he’ll remove all the red tape with the Colorado bunker program. His longtime secretary Marsha (Amy Pietz) is there is well assuring him that he’s never getting rid of her. Ouch. Of all the heart wrenching moments in The Day, Marsha realizing what all her years of loyalty got her was crushing. They really couldn’t have found a use for her in Paradise?
Kane is here as well telling Sam that if she has a problem with a developer that he knows someone who can take her of it. Cue up Billy Pace (yay!) who has to give Sam an orientation on “So you hired a hit man etiquette 101.” Watching this scene in Another Day is wild knowing how that power dynamic would change a few years later with Sinatra far more comfortable ordering assassinations.
Billy talks up the developer Henry Miller (Patrick Fischler), who talks about his wife and the high-end grad class he teaches as well as one brilliant student who is like the son he never had. Instead of signing the buyout — Billy’s easy way — Henry gives him his address so he can see his bedridden wife (Gwen Holloway) suffering from Huntington’s disease. Henry says he’ll see Alex (!) soon and simply asks Billy not to kill his protege. Billy coldly kills Henry but does let the protege go. He’s far less scruffy here, but that brilliant protege is none other than Link! Why does he now want to go along with Geiger’s plan to kill Alex?
Sinatra doesn’t buckle under Gabriela or Baines’ questions. Jane gets a kick out of it, but Robinson is clocking her now. She checks out Jane’s heavily redacted files and then compares Jane’s report on Billy’s “suicide” and immediately sees inconsistencies after visiting his place. Jane said he had chronic shoulder pain while he has a weight bench, and he suffered from depressive episodes like he had nothing to live for, yet Robinson finds the ring he was planning to propose to Jane.
Jane manages to get Baines alone while he does his usual jog. Robinson is rightfully leery of Jane but does easily the dumbest thing a Paradise character has done by asking on the Secret Service group chat for Jane’s location. Robinson might as well have texted “Hey potential murder suspect, please ignore this question on your whereabouts. TTYL. Ok, bye!”

Baines needs a breath and gets a wide one courtesy of Jane slashing his throat. To seal it, she places an X on his back to blame the youth brigade. Shout to Robinson for telling Presley that Jeremy with the good hair is going full Les Mis at a very young age. I understood that reference. Well, both of ‘em.
Since the writers are making Jane the world’s smartest psychopath incapable of ever making a mistake, she manages to silence her location long enough for Robinson to check on Baines without radioing in that he’s down. Sigh. She knocks out Robinson and claims she killed Baines. Was one little text question all Jane needed to frame Robinson, who really couldn’t possibly have come off any dumber here.
Also, it felt like killing Baines was way too early in the season. He was channeling a spiraling President Charles Logan beautifully as the wild card who could jeopardize Sinatra’s plans. With him murdered, Xavier out of paradise and Robinson headed for prison, who can stop her now?
Gabriela drops by to tell Sinatra she’s not here to give her a second chance. She’s really there to set up a bug so she can flip the I spy tables on her former bestie, who she learns was pulling a lot of strings using her maid Carmen (Maria-Elena Laas) as her messenger. What Gabriela doesn’t know is the assassinate code of saying someone needs a breath mint, which she got from Billy and apparently passed on to Jane.
As for Sinatra’s big secret? Anders probably knows, but he’s in prison for speaking out against Baines, which is exactly why Jeremy decided to get arrested. He wants to blow the doors off of paradise and figures its architect can show him how it’s done, done, done. Sorry. Too much KPop.
Another Day in Paradise sure made for a sunny day for Sinatra, who got a month vacation before immediately getting back in the catbird seat. The status quo seemed far more intriguing but at least there’s far more wide-open subplots like Xavier & Annie and Link and the boys heading to Colorado. It will be very interesting to see how things play out over the next batch of episodes.
