Dynamite Entertainment 3/11/26 – Space Ghost vol 2 9 review
Space Ghost vol 2 9 maintains the series’ overall brilliance as the creative team stays fully dialed in with the introduction of a new threat.
Space Ghost, Jan and Jace are still reeling from the fallout of their battle with The Anti-Matter Man and the shock of learning his identity as the twins’ grandfather, Dr. Henry Contra.
Space Ghost vol 2 9 kicks off with Space Ghost on the run from authorities led by Det. Sorena Prospero. In a shocker, they actually manage to overwhelm Space Ghost before writer David Pepose reveals what’s really going on. Sorena is no detective, but a sorceress who’s managed to tap into the group’s collective psyche to place them in a nightmare dreamscape that will kill them in a half hour.
Once again, Pepose sets up the fourth member of the team — Blip — to be the hero as he’s unaffected by The Sorceress’ powers. Pepose makes these spotlight issues flow organically and while Space Ghost is the title character, he never feels beholden to make Space Ghost have every important moment and withhold the supporting characters from every getting any shine. This formula has worked well throughout the two volumes and has quietly been such a key reason for the title’s success.
Continuing that theme of ensuring the cast gets their due, Space Ghost vol 2 9 also provides a fun showcase for Jace, whose nightmare dream scenario finds him becoming more machine than boy as Robochanic with robotic sidekick versions of Jan and Space Ghost. Artist Jonathan Lau seems to have the most fun with this sequence in Space Ghost vol 2 9 as Robochanic battles Divido-Cyclops, an alien that multiplies upon being struck.

Jan has the more personal nightmare as she’s with her grandfather again unaware that she’s being emotionally tortured. On a similar front, Space Ghost is being tormented by Det. Prospero over killing Dr. Contra. The Sorceress has found the team’s emotional vulnerabilities as is breaking them down unless Blip and Jace can save the day.
Lau’s dynamic artwork isn’t limited to the Blip and Jace sequence as the dream escape panels are very exciting with unique perspectives that invite readers to take in the full pages. Andrew Dalhouse’s explosive colors always add another layer of wow-factor to the art as he skillfully uses heavy blacks to further emphasize Space Ghost and the twin’s bright costumes. Letterer Taylor Esposito always delivers very clean dialogue with engaging sound effect fonts that add that extra pizzaz to the action.
Space Ghost vol 2 9 reiterates how fortunate the series is to have the creative team remain intact through the two volumes. With most modern comics, Lau would need relief from another artist possibly requiring another colorist. For Space Ghost, the team has stayed committed to ensuring a consistently written, drawn, colored and lettered comic. That used to be the norm for years for most titles, but it’s especially appreciated these days.
Beyond The Sorceress, Space Ghost vol 2 9 also introduces a character who seems like the big boss of this volume, Tempus the Time Master. This seems to be the threat Space Ghost was warned about in the previous volume.
Space Ghost vol 2 9 was another stellar issue in a series that continually makes that the norm. With most stories efficiently told over one issue, readers are getting a comprehensive story each month making it one of the absolute best bang for your buck comics available on the shelves today.
