MOTU Masterverse New Eternia Mantenna review (2025)

Mantenna marks my first Masters of the Universe New Eternia member of the Evil Horde. I picked up most of them in the Masterverse Revelations line, but the New Eternia subset has been so fun that’s my main focus for my MOTU collection these days.

Let’s see if Mantenna was a figure worth keeping my eye on or if he’s nothing but an eyesore.

Packaging: The Masterverse packaging is the absolute best in the business for a mainstream figure line, and the only competition is Mattel’s WWE line. I’ve really dug how the packaging tells the story of this very intriguing New Eternia saga. The front portion shows Mantenna leading a charge and firing one of his eye blasters as Evil Horde drop ships hover in the skies.

Since his look doesn’t really change, Mantenna’s side portrait art is the same with his full body portrait and close up shot with the exception of his eyes surging out in the wider drawing. Over on the back, there’s a full glimpse of the figure with his standard eyeballs extended.

The bio is interesting as it suggests that Hordak has just dispatched the members of the Evil Horde throughout New Eternia to find Castle Grayskull pieces instead of pillaging and conquering as a unit.

Likeness: Similar to the rest of the Evil Horde, Mantenna looks monstrous in a way that eclipses Skeletor’s Evil Warriors. He’s got a really gruesome head sculpt with the bat-like huge ears and his lamprey-style mouth with the sharp fangs. The sculpt looks even cooler since all of the teeth aren’t the same length. Some of small, others are medium size, and others are especially long.

Naturally one of the more distinguishing elements of his design are his wide, bug-eyed eyes. The default sculpt features a pair of veiny eyes with a somewhat foggy translucent covering. This makes them look creepier.

Mantenna’s got a thin neck that’s engulfed by his chest armor with a translucent center leading to that familiar Evil Horde logo. That’s a clever way to incorporate the logo. His shoulders have tiny spikes while his arms have tufts of hair flowing from his forearms with smaller bracers on both wrists. His belt also has the bat pattern, and he’s got armored tights.

The other creepy visual to Mantenna are his four legs. They’re spread out in a crab-like position and have the tiny spikes along the thighs as well as larger and smaller fins angling down on all four legs, which also have some armor plating along his knees. He wears Horde-approved shin armor and more mechanical style boots.

Scale: New Eternia Mantenna is right around the average height for an Evil Horde character as they’re typically portrayed as taller than the heroes on Etheria or New Etheria in this case. He’s taller than the already impressively scaled Mosquitor.

MORE:

Paint: Poor paint jobs is not something that’s ever been an issue with the Masterverse line. The figures don’t have very intricate paint work, but what necessary paint detail is done crisp and clean especially the white teeth. There are just a few drops of red on his armor.

The translucent parts with his eyes and chest piece allow the orange/gold sections to not get lost against the red in his head and chest plate. The black in his torso armor and tights contrast nicely against the dark blue and gold belt.

Articulation: Mantenna features 30 points of articulation. The Masterverse line has a very fluid flow of movement with a sensible articulation scheme. His legs allow for some fun posing as he can balance on two alternating ones. Due to the engineering, his knees are single-jointed, but he gets all the range he really needed.

Accessories: Given his more intricate sculpt, Mantenna couldn’t get a ton of accessories.

He’s got the eye stalks that can be plugged into his eye sockets to give him more range for his surveillance efforts. They can be placed in a lower or raised position to mix up how wild you want him to look.

To switch up his look, he’s got another set of eyes that are a purer translucent orange with a black dot in the center.

Finally, he has a blaster that appears to shoot from another eyeball with the tentacle wrapped around it. This is a wild visual and really makes Mantenna look like a bizarre nightmarish villain for the Eternian heroes to battle.

Worth it?  I got Mantenna for $17 thanks to a very good sale over at RetroRobo Toys.  He’s another stellar figure in the line that continues to justify its $23 price point.

Rating: out 9.5 of 10

Mantenna is another stellar arrival to the New Eternia line. His fun gimmick is carried off perfectly and the accessories add some cool display options.

Where to Get It? The New Eternia figures have been pretty hard to find in stores besides a few. You can get him from Entertainment Earth and the other Masterverse figures from Amazon.
