WWE Monday Night War Syxx review – BAF Dusty Rhodes (2024)

Syxx was the punk member of the nWo. The one guy everyone who was Team WCW assumed they could whip if it weren’t for his best friends Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. In the peak early days of the faction, Syxx was a key member of the team essentially brought in as the nWo’s cruiserweight threat.

Mattel made a Syxx figure early on in the Elite line, but it was more of an X-Pac figure thanks to the thicker beard. Plus, like too many Sean Waltman figures, that Syxx figure had him in a permanent tongue sticking out expression. For the Monday Night War figure, Mattel gave us an updated Syxx that is superior on all levels. This was a needed upgrade and was immediately one of my most wanted figures from Mattel in 2024 after his debut.

Let’s see if this version of Syxx is sweeeeet or simply sucks.

Packaging: The Monday Night War packaging is pretty unique compared to other Elite presentations. It’s got the grated backdrop of Monday Night Nitro in the backdrop and the explosion that signaled the kickoff to the show. I dig that since so much of WWE history is about WWE winning so it’s nice to get a more WCW-focused packaging setup.

Syxx’s portrait is in the upper left side and a bigger window shows The Monday Night War WWE vs WCW logo and this wave’s Build-A-Figure nWo Dusty Rhodes. That was one of the dumbest turns in the whole nWo angle. Over on the side portrait, there is a larger portrait of Syxx and the date of this attire, which is a very nice touch.

On the back, we get the usual stat ticker and a great bio that specifically references Syxx’s match on April 21, 1997. Along the bottom is the cross sell of the other figures in this wave. I do appreciate it only takes four figures to build WWE BAFs.

Likeness: This is easily the best Syxx figure made. Of the entire two we’ve had so far. Again, the first version felt very much like a repurposed X-Pac figure with nWo red and gold colors. With this version, Mattel took noticeable strides to actually make this figure look like Syxx.

It starts with the expression, which looks very confident and smug. The tongue sticking out expression doesn’t really convey any personality. This one gives that punk bastard look that he was known for while in the nWo. His beard is much tighter and trimmed closer to his face compared to the bushier beard look of X-Pac. His hair is stringier and sculpted to not look so poofy.

And this figure doesn’t have the headband as part of his regular wrestling gear. His default hands are the nWo sign, which is a great inclusion for any figure who was part of the nWo.

As the 1-2-3 Kid, Waltman was slim and very skinny. As Syxx, he bulked up a bit more to the point he was thicker than most of the luchadores on the WCW roster. The reference pic on the back shows that this mold was the best choice for him by far.

His unique kneepads are included, and he’s got his elbow pads as well.

Scale:  Syxx was 6’1” the same height as one of his main rivals, Ric Flair. Naturally, he’s shorter than the 6’8” Scott Hall and 6’10” Kevin Nash. He should be noticeably taller than the 5’8″ Eddie Guerrero.

MORE:

Paint: Sticking closer to the reference material this time, Syxx’s wristbands are the appropriately colored black now instead of white. The red and gold lightning placed throughout his outfit is clean even with such precise lining required.

This attire doesn’t have the cool Thug or 6 Pac lettering so it’s nice to have some different options. There is a Thug chase version. Unlike the first Syxx figure, the painted torso looks a lot better.

His kneepads actually get a little paint deco as well, which was a nice surprise.

Articulation:  Syxx can hit all of his high flying moves and has an extra bonus now with the double-jointed elbows upgrade. He can pull off a better version of The Buzzkill submission finisher.

The elbow upgrade also adds to Syxx’s martial arts posing.

Syxx has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • bicep
  • elbow (double jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • waist
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee (double jointed)
  • ankle

Accessories: Syxx has three additional sets of hands — a flat palm/suck it set, fists and clutching hands.

He doesn’t come with the WCW Cruiserweight title, but enough figures have it that it’s not a huge omission.

Finally, he does have the arms for the BAF Dusty.

Worth It? Walmart hasn’t gotten the memo that figures in 2024 need to be closer to $25 compared to $20. Even with a BAF, Syxx clocked in at the vintage price of $19.99. That’s hard to complain about now.

Rating: 10 out of 10

Syxx desperately needed an upgrade and while it’s not an Ultimate Edition figure to fit alongside the rest of the core nWo articulation-wise, he looks much better with the improved likeness.

Where to Get It? The Monday Night Wars figures are exclusive to Wal-Mart. I pre-ordered him off their website, but actually found him in a store so I grabbed him so you might start checking your stores.
