Daredevil Born Again: Shoot the Moon review S2 E2

Shoot the Moon doesn’t let up any of the intensity from the debut entry of Born Again’s second season.

Daredevil “watches” Cherry get wheeled out to hospital. While his heart was failing, he’s been stabilized and is OK. The same can’t be said for the Anti-Vigilante Task Force goons who managed to unmask Daredevil as lawyer Matt Murdock. They couldn’t cash in with that discovery since Bullseye immediately killed them before leaving a message on another knife for DD.

Fortunately, Shoot the Moon reminds viewers that Daredevil characters aren’t stupid. Buck tells Fisk that someone is helping Daredevil — someone with good aim. It’s vital that Kingpin doesn’t lose sight that Bullseye is coming for him. While Daredevil is trying to tear down Fisk’s corrupt mayoral reign, Bullseye is coming for his life.

This prompts Fisk to be even more aggressive in Shoot the Moon as he has the AVTF storm the Aegean Gardens and arrest its owner, Ariana (Annie Parisse). Buck is more than a mere reliable henchman to Fisk. He’s his Luca Brasi and Tom Hagen in one. Buck suggests outing Matt as Daredevil, but Fisk understands the bad optics of saying the blind man he called a hero is also a dangerous vigilante. Instead, Fisk makes a plea to NYC to help find Matt Murdock, the brave hero and bring him home.

Matt and Karen appreciate that savvy move as it gets both sides of New York to find him — those who want the vigilante Daredevil brought to justice and the others who want to help find a hero are all on the lookout. With the release of another anti-Kingpin video, Sheila and Anthony try to figure out who is leaking the footage.

Shoot the Moon also establishes another key subplot for this season as the AVTF leader Powell wants payback on Daredevil for taking out some of his men. Powell promises he’ll either bring Murdock to Fisk’s office or Daredevil’s head on a spike. “Either of those would be sufficient,” Fisk says. That is an easy win-win for him.

Cole North returns after recovering from his wounds at the hands of The Punisher. He wants back in on the AVTF. Powell doesn’t take much convincing since Cole was one of the most reliable AVTF members. Before dealing with Murdock and Daredevil, Powell wants to tie up a loose end and take out Cherry, but his men are greeted by Cherry’s former fellow police officers. This was a very effective scene to show not all of law enforcement is under Fisk’s thumb.

The two AVTF agents probably would have been better off just waiting in the room as Bullseye stalks them and takes them out in the elevator. Shoot the Moon is really laying into Bullseye as this very dangerous serial killer style anti-hero(?) who is very much a wildcard this season.

Despite Daniel’s best efforts to keep the anti-Kingpin videos low-key, Fisk has seen them and is not thrilled. Daniel assures Fisk he is the only one in the building he feels the need to protect. Good answer, Daniel, but don’t forget yourself in that equation.

Karen watches The Northern Star clean up commence while Matt listens on. If everyone is looking for him in some capacity, Matt’s gonna need a better disguise beyond a hoodie and sunglasses.

Understandably concerned about Fisk’s ambition, Vanessa asks him how many worlds he needs to conquer. “How many are out there?” Well, there’s a whole multiverse, Wilson, but let’s just focus on this awesome Born Again reality right now.

Shoot the Moon shows how a comic book with numerous subplots can successfully work in a TV format. Hector Ayala’s widow, Soledad (Ashley Marie Ortiz) and his niece, Angela (Camila Rodriguez), discuss Matt and Hector while getting some items at the local convenience store. They’ve got awful timing as one of Angela’s classmates. Javi, is trying to steal some stuff. Soledad doesn’t want Javi getting in trouble but the store owner is fed up with thieves and pulls a gun out.

His timing is also bad as the AVTF takes their power too literal and arrests the store owner and Soledad for getting in the way. The footage is rough and looks way too similar to ICE arrests and protests going on in the real world. The sad thing is there are no heroes in the real world to protect against this kind of unchecked authority.

Shoot the Moon features a fantastic transition from the horror on Angela’s face watching her aunt get arrested to Vanessa’s smug smile of confidence as she watches Heather talk about vigilantes. Heather asks if she thinks Daredevil or Punisher killed Matt. Vanessa doesn’t think so confident with her insider knowledge, but she can’t shake the feeling she’s being watched. That proves true as in the distance, Bullseye is watching her. He hasn’t forgotten.

Angela goes to Kirsten’s office since she and Matt helped get Hector acquitted, but her eyes get distracted in seeing the box of Hector’s stuff including his White Tiger costume. Daniel is hoping against hope that his hunch isn’t correct as he asks BB if she was the one who leaked the footage. He pleads with her that it’s not a game. “You could get hurt. We could get hurt.”

One of the best moments in Shoot the Moon was the reveal that BB is in fact the actor/director/writer producing the anti-Fisk videos. That felt like it could become a needlessly frustrating mystery since BB made the most obvious candidate.

Vanessa is now having nightmares of Bullseye coming for her like some tormenting Grim Reaper. Matt and Karen have a nice moment ruined when he hears AVTF agents coming for Josie in her bar below. So that’s where they’ve been hiding out after Matt’s apartment got blown up!

Daredevil beats down the task force agents in another well-staged fight. The Born Again fight choreographers really have a firm understanding of how Daredevil should move in these action sequences.

While DD knocks the others out and tells Josie to get out of town, Karen has a surprise for him — their very own AVTF member to interrogate. Just how down the dark side is Karen planning to go?

Shoot the Moon didn’t let up from the season premiere with some key reveals and advancement of the AVTF storyline.
