Image Comics reviews 4/1/26 – Sssilent Missions Baroness 1
Sssilent Missions Baroness 1 kicks off the monthlong Real American Hero special event showcasing various Cobra agents.
With a dialogue-free, limited text story from Declan Shalvey the bulk of the storytelling burden falls for Sssilent Missions Baroness falls on artist Joëlle Jones.
Jones proves an ideal fit for Baroness as she deftly carries out Cobra Commander’s plan to assassinate a high-value target during a night at the opera.
Right away from the opening sequence of Sssilent Missions Baroness when Cobra Commander is deciding on which operative to deploy it’s clear that Jones was the best artist for this story.
Shalvey and Jones seem to have been somewhat influenced by the opening act of Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation with Baroness in the role of Isla Faust and Destro as Ethan Hunt.
Destro is also in attendance at the performance although this raises more questions than answers can be provided in a dialogue-free story. It seems like Cobra Commander may have dispatched both of his top agents to kill the target and they clash over who gets the honor of the kill.

Jones plays this skirmish out well with an enjoyably cinematic sense of storytelling, yet Baroness’ intent isn’t always clear. The ending also feels somewhat anticlimactic as it seems to lack some context to make for a satisfying conclusion. Colorist Mike Spicer leans into the atmosphere of the opera with shadowy locations and others flush with rich colors.
Sssilent Missions Baroness faces the same challenge of other creative teams trying to tell a full-blown story without the benefit of words as strong as Larry Hama did in GI Joe 21. It’s not an enviable challenge. While the story itself is too complex, Jones’ artwork makes for a strong visual treat.
