GI Joe Classified Series Mainframe action figure review No. 178 (2025)
Mainframe was introduced with the 1986 wave of Joes in a cutting-edge specialty as the Joe’s computer specialist. While Dial-Tone handled the comms, Mainframe was hard at work dealing with Cobra’s hi-tech machinery.
Impressively, Mainframe has an 80s specialty that’s probably more important in 2026 since he could be the Joe filtering out all of the Cobra AI technology. He was part of the final 2025 wave with a heavy emphasis on the 86 squad, which is now nearing completion.
Let’s see if Mainframe gets a good signal or if he’ll be stuck loading to trying to meet my expectations.
Packaging: Mainframe gets the standard packaging setup. He’s No. 178 in the line as it shows no signs of slowing down now.
The main side artwork shows Mainframe carrying his briefcase and a pistol with his alternate headpiece on. Over on the other side it’s the smaller version of the stats along with the QR Code to nowhere. Maybe Hasbro can get Mainframe on that? On the back is a cool render of Mainframe in action.
His skill sets match up how you’d expect. He’s got a 4 in computer technology and science, a 3 in telecommunications device and a 1 in electrical engineering.
Likeness: Mainframe has a focused expression neither registering too intense or too anxious. He’s steady and calm like he needs to be prepped to crack some elaborate Cobra coding sequence.
I miss his hoodie-like neckpiece. It’s replaced by a basic shirt and a T-shirt underneath. This is a unique shirt as it’s got data pads sculpted onto it. His sleeves are still rolled up above the elbow, and he’s still got gloves. On his left forearm is a pad with a coding sequence playing out to help him hack into different digital locks.
Mainframe still has his single strap across his left shoulder with more digital devices and a holster for his pistol. He’s got a sheathe for his right leg and a holster on his left leg for one of his data devices. Since he’s likely going to be crawling under desks or fixing some server, the addition of kneepads make sense. This might be one of the reasons Hasbro opted to go with the Tunnel Rat legs for him. He’s also got some yellow and red cables on his back.
Scale: Mainframe has taken some heat from Joe fans for being shorter since he uses the lower half of the Tunnel-Rat mold.
If he were Roadblock size, that wouldn’t work out so well. He’s definitely looking up to the rest of his wave mates and is close to being out of scale since he’s slight as well as short. I’ve seen some mods that use Firefly or Metal-Head legs to put him eye to eye with Beach-Head and crew.
I gave him a longer neck peg, which gave him a giraffe neck, but I think I will have to explore some longer legs. Tunnel-Rat had so much gear he didn’t look so tiny while Mainframe doesn’t get the benefit of any extra outfit padding to thicken him up some.

Paint: Mainframe had a basic color scheme of light grey with some black and silver accents for his straps and buckles. For his CS figure, Hasbro decided to jazz it up a bit going with a light grey top and darker grey pants.
Since he has more gear, there’s more straps with black to break up the grey as well as more silver accents for the buckles. His Army Combat Infantryman Badge is red and silver while his cables have a clean yellow and red paint job.
Articulation: Mainframe’s main deal is to be the guy in the chair. He’s the one figuring out to access the Firebat while Leatherneck, Wet-Suit and Beach-Head are trying to stave off BATs as Low-Light and Sci-Fi take out Vipers from a distance. Still, when the action calls for it, he’s more than capable of mixing it up in a firefight.
The smooth CS articulation model makes it easy to get him right into the fray. He doesn’t have any restrictive elements to his outfit so he can scrap with any Cobra or get posed in some creative hi-tech wet works ops.
Mainframe has:
- head
- neck
- shoulders (butterfly)
- elbow (double-jointed)
- forearm
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- mid-torso
- torso
- waist
- hips (ball-jointed)
- drop down hips
- knees (double-jointed)
- ankles
Accessories: Mainframe continues the wave trend of being packed with accessories with more than a few being some tweaks to his RAH loadout.
First, he gets his unique BP75E field transmitter/receiver unit to ensure he’s his own walking WiFi provider. It has some tampo detail to show it’s scanning and connecting.
Next is his portable laptop. It’s just the right size of not being overly bulky, but with enough detail with the screen and keyboard that the Joe’s computer tech would need while out in the field. For the other Joes, a small setup on their gear is fine, but Mainframe needs more. I love the detailed screen and the keypad. The laptop can port into the receiver unit if you want his hands-free.
Mainframe wasn’t known as a major fighter especially in the elite 86 squad, so he’s not loaded with a formidable arsenal. He gets a knife with a black group and silver blade and a pistol. The pistol looks like it could pack enough punch to get him out of tight spots — certainly enough to stop a few Techno and Televipers. That’s more than his RAH figure got as he didn’t have any offensive weapons.
He also has a hacking and scanning device. You can attach the hose to one end and the other to the receiver unit as well as resting the device into a space for it. Additionally, he has a Signal Key Loader for encrypted information.
Next up is his alternate head sculpt, which ditches the helmet in place of a helmet for a baseball cap with a headset likely so he can stay in close contact with Dial-Tone when they’re working in concert on missions.
I like the additional portrait even though I’m probably going to keep him in his mostly classic RAH helmet portrait as my default look.
Worth It? Mainframe is $27.99, the new price for the base Hasbro figures. Of their various lines jumping to this new price, the GI Joe CS team is making the effort to justify the increase. You might be able to find him for the older $25 price, which is a very solid deal.
Rating: 8.5 out of 10
Mainframe is a really nice figure that’s really just held back due to his slighter frame/lack of height. With some mods, he could be a 10 thanks to his gear, but he loses some points for the need to fix him up.
Where to Get It? Mainframe has shown up at Target stores, but if you miss the one time they’re stocked, you might be waiting for a while. You can also get him from Amazon and Entertainment Earth.
