Image Comics reviews 4/8/26 – Transformers 31, GI Joe RAH 327
Blood and Thunder 12
Akeldama faces off with the Science Police to protect Desmiox, the “monster” she was called in to apprehend at the start of the series.
While confronting numerous squads, Akeldama and Desmiox — along with some unexpected allies — do some major, violent damage to the officers. Artist E.J. Su delivers on the buildup to this big showdown with large, widescreen action filled with laser blasts, impalements, explosions and blood. Lots of blood. Colorist Msassyk keeps the carnage under control with a steady blend of contrasting colors, so the action is easy to take in. Letterer Rus Wooton adds fun, large-scale sound effect fonts while utilizing a variety of text layouts for the various races in the issue.
Writer Benito Cereno took a bit to find his groove, but now that it’s locked in Akeldama has evolved into one of the most compelling new characters in comics. She’s fearless, determined and has gone from seeking a payday to standing up for those unable to defend themselves. This first year of Blood and Thunder has been a very well-executed hero’s journey and Cereno deserves a ton of credit for realistically portraying her growth.
By the end of this issue, Cereno has laid the groundwork for a new status quo that seems poised to make for an equally exciting second year for one of Image’s most compelling newer series.
