Do Not Enter review (2026)
Do Not Enter feels like it could have been a contender in the quasi found footage streamer genre, but it comes undone due to a series of poor decisions that ultimately makes the title more of a warning than an invitation.
The Creepers, a group of streamers aren’t feeling the love from their urban exploration videos. After their latest daring stunt fails to make much of a social impact the gang decides to seek a more infamous location — The Paragon Hotel.
The site is steeped in lore thanks to its mob connections and hidden million-dollar fortune. But it also has a legacy where everyone who goes after the fortune never leaves.
That makes the Paragon a perfect opportunity for The Creepers to get their social media mojo back. Ringleader Rick (Jake Manley, Holidate) is all set to lead the troop through its most challenging effort yet. His girlfriend, Diane (Adeline Rudolph, Mortal Kombat II) handles the Creepers’ social media content while Verne (Shane Paul McGhie) shoots the still photography and Cora (Francesca Reale, Stranger Things) is an expert at lockpicking. Look out Jill Valentine.
To help boost their clicks and views, Cora invites a reporter, Frank (Laurence O’Fuarain), to document their journey.
Easily one of the strengths of Do Not Enter is the cast. The ensemble is likable with believable banter from a group of longtime friends. It seems like there’s more to Frank than meets the eye, but his role as the outsider is helpful as he asks questions viewers might about the group dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that Frank gives off a classic action hero vibe…if he can be trusted.
Do Not Enter director Marc Klasfeld does a solid job setting up the tense environment and mystery in the opening act.
Screenwriters Dikega Hadnot, Spencer Mandel and Stephen Susco — adapting David Morrell’e 2005 novel — could have fleshed out the Creepers’ backstory stronger specifically to explain their motivations as a group since they’re not looking for some big score.
Initially the setup is promising. The Creepers make their way into the hotel through tunnel systems complete with the requisite claustrophobic extended crawl space and creepy encounter with rats. upon entering they split up and pair off through different isolated areas.
The filmmakers abruptly ditch the livestream component, which felt not just ill-advised but misleading since the premise of Do Not Enter is this group of explorers sharing their discoveries with their audience.
One thing not addressed in Do Not Enter is how or why the hotel has any electricity in certain pockets. Another discarded subplot is the mystery of who sets up traps through the hotel. There’s a bear trap and a subtly placed string of piano wire clearly intended to do harm, but the perpetrator isn’t revealed. Ditto on the identity of the person/thing/entity mysteriously stringing up cell phones in a tree that’s grown inside the hotel.
To this point, Do Not Enter almost plays out like a Supermassive video game like Until Dawn with shifting character perspectives and increasingly perilous scenarios. This seemed like a savvy decision given the smaller cast and locale that could have been sustainable through the final act.
Bringing a rival streaming group, The Scavengers, creates another narrative hurdle that can’t be cleared. The Scavengers are just in it for the money and are so over the top and outright homicidal that they ruin the creepy atmosphere and tone that was being established just fine without them.
The Scavengers’ arrival paves the way for the real menace running around the hotel. Despite an oddly shaped physique, the creature’s design is fairly generic for the big terror claiming victims. This doesn’t set up an real tension and stakes as the creature has its own questionable logic in terms of who it will kill, who gets taken and brought to a room of candles and a bed and who gets their heart yanked out of their chest.
Ultimately, Do Not Enter has way too many questions that go unanswered for a thriller that seems to lose the plot midway through. For better modern day streaming explorer thrills, check out #ChadGetsTheAxe or Followed.
